LOSTblog.com Exclusive Artist Interview: Mark McDevitt of Methane Studios

From DamonCarltonandAPolarBear.com :

In celebration of LOST's final season and as a project of fan appreciation, 16 top designers and artists, who are also fans of the show, were commissioned to create artwork celebrating one of the series' most memorable, and unforgettable, "water cooler" moments. This ultimate "fan art" was then turned into labor intensive, hand-pulled screen prints, limited to an edition of just 300, with less than 200 available to the public through our websites. Each beautiful poster tells its own different story, allowing the fan to relive memorable and influential moments in an artistic manner, as the show's storied run comes to a close. Once this limited edition print has sold out, they will never be printed again. Celebrate the fandom, community and family created by one of televisions' greatest shows by hanging a little part of it's history, inspiration and influence on your wall.

Now that all 16 of the prints have been released, Lost Blog has set out to interview each of the respective artists. All these talented artists have different influences, different backgrounds, and accordingly...different takes on our favorite show. Over the next few weeks we will post our interviews with these incredible talents. Enjoy.

Our 5th interview is with Marc McDevitt of Methane Studios. His piece is entitled "The Dharma Van."

LOSTblog: How did you become a fan of LOST?

Mark McDevitt: I'm a sucker for these kinds of shows. I got hooked on LOST from the beginning. I don't watch that many TV shows anymore but I loved the X-Files, Nightstalker, the Twilight Zone, Buffy The Vampire Slayer  and to me I was missing this type of show since the X-Files ended their run. When LOST is over there will be a huge void in my programing, so I guess I better start watching Fringe.  It also helps my wife likes it too.

LOSTblog: Describe the details about how you were contacted to do the poster?

Mark McDevitt: We were contacted by Jensen from Gallery 1988 in April 2009.

LOSTblog: What instructions or parameters were you given for the poster?

Mark McDevitt: To pick a water cooler standout moment from LOST and create a poster that relates to that moment. We picked the Dharma Van which I thought was pretty cool when they discovered it in the jungle along with Ben's (workman) deceased father and beer which would become the most valuable commodity on the island in my book. Now there are a lot of great moments on the show, but how cool would it be to find this van that had been lost (no pun intended) in time for years?

LOSTblog: What was your process for developing the poster?

Mark McDevitt: We had been using the VW van periodically for the last few years so I think it was fate that we did this poster. It was fun to use the sequence coding on the van along with the hidden skull which represents fate. A lot of people were trying to figure out a hidden meaning with the numbers on the van and I wish I had a good story about that, but it's just the numbers repeating.

LOSTblog: How did this project compare to your other creations?

Mark McDevitt: I got my concept pretty quick and that is usually the hardest part, but it took a while to execute since there is a lot of detail. When I did this I was doing some posters in a similar style so I guess that made it easier. Plus I was really excited to be a part of this series.

LOSTblog: Besides your own, what is your favorite print from the series?

Mark McDevitt: That's a hard call since there were so many great posters, but Tyler Stout and Dan McCarthy's are both great. I like Tyler's ensemble feel and I like the vast loneliness and distant feeling that Dan's conveys. Both of those guys do consistently great work and I have been a fan of both for a while.

LOSTblog: Who is your favorite LOST character and why?

Mark McDevitt: I like Sawyer since he has the best smart ass lines of the show. My favorite scene is when he is  drinking the Dharma beer outside the van with Ben's skeletor father. I just hope they don't make him too nice this final season like they did with the Fonze toward the end of Happy Days. John Locke runs a close second though, and was one of my first favorites. Mr. Eko I thought was a great character with an interesting background and he met his fate way too early, but I think he could have been a really cool character.

LOSTblog: Kate or Juliet?

Mark McDevitt: Kate all the way! Those Freckles, not to mention she looks good in a tank top.
