10 FAITH Reasons We Love LOST

As I type this we are less than fourteen hours away from season six. Fans are foaming at the mouth (some of us literally) to sink our teeth into the final season of TV’s greatest show. LOST fans are special. I must admit that this is the first time in my life that I have ever had a connection with fans of a show that is this strong (actually I’ve never even had any kind of connection before).

Unlike many LOSTies that I know, I am NOT a television fan. I don’t watch Fringe, or House, or 24, or Dollhouse, or…well…you name it. Honestly, I find that watching television, for the most part, can be a huge time waster in a world where real life is going on. And that brings me to my point. LOST somehow touches real life. We see characters struggling on the road to redemption and we are hopeful ourselves. We believe that our own struggles just may be worth it.

Whether you are a believer in God or an atheist or somewhere in between, you know that LOST is about a faith journey. The battle between faith and reason, or perhaps the apparent battle. This not only draws us to the show, it unites us. I’ve come up with 10 faith reason we love LOST. I hope you enjoy them.

1.)  The island: We all want to believe in something bigger than ourselves.

2).  Redemption: We all want to believe that we are not beyond saving.

3).  Love: We all want to believe that we are loved, even when we do not deserve it.

4.)  The Others: we all want to believe that we belong…somewhere.

5).  Purpose: Like Locke, we all want to believe that we are here for a reason.

6).  Community: We all want to believe that we are not alone, we are part of a group that is more valuable than the individual.

7).  Worship: We all want to believe that someone outside of ourselves is worth our total devotion.

8).  Grace: We all want to believe that we get a second chance, and third, and fourth, ...

9).  Judgment: We all want to believe that we ultimately will be blessed and not judged (i.e. the Smoke Monster).

10). Spiritual warfare: We all want to believe that there is ultimate good that will triumph over evil.

I’m sure there are more, but these represent 10 faith themes that I find running through the fabric of the entire series. Can’t wait to watch season six with you! Live together, die alone.
