Q: How long have you been watching Lost?
Watched the first two episodes a couple of months after they aired, and then, having read about the disillusionment of my friends in the US, I didn't bother watching again until the S3 finale, which I watched as it aired on Sky...
Q: How did Lost get its polar bear claws into you? What about it got you hooked?
The sudden realisation that things were 'getting interesting' - the flashfowards at the end of S3, the idea that we weren't just watching an escape story, the complexity of the characters...from this point, I wanted to go back and watch the three seasons 'properly'...and so I did! Also as soon as all the names clicked in my head...my years spent studying philosophy finally found a genuine sense of purpose...
Q: Favourite character?
Terribly hard to choose. I love how far Sawyer's come - I hope he doesn't end up going backwards. I think Ben is the most glorious exploration of dialogue and acting - I love almost every scene he's in. Richard Alpert intrigues me, and I'm quite unashamedly in love with his eyes...
Q: Least favourite character?
I suppose I never cared desperately for Libby... I've never seen the appeal of Jack, either. Dull, contrary, trite, misguided, dull, bad hair, dull...
Q: Favorite episode or season?
The Man Behind the Curtain - I get more out of it every time I watch it, and I'm sure it's going to be a standout episode with a ton of clues in it by the end of everything. I think Season 3 is my favourite season overall...almost every episode captivated me in a different way. I miss the longer seasons!
Q: Least favorite episode or season?
Really didn't enjoy Namaste, nor He's Our You. Strange, given that there are some knock-out episodes in Season 5...I think whenever 'truth serum' is in the mix, you lose me...also I didn't feel the heart in those two episodes, the way I usually see it.
Q: Are you Team Jack or Team Locke?
Team Locke, at least until Season 5. But if there was a Team Richard option, I'd pick that.
Q: If you had to be one of the following, which would it be and why: an 815 survivor, an Other or a member of the Dharma Initiative?
An Other. They seem busy, driven and interesting. I'd rather avoid a plane crash and the DHARMA Initiative would've had me breaking things and swearing with boredom.
Q: Which character’s demise were you most upset to see happening?
Charlie, has to be Charlie. He was so resigned to it all, and he was so daft, locking himself in, rather than out, and 'Not Penny's Boat', and no more Dom Monaghan (the only reason I noticed the show happening at all, to start with) and, aw...
Q: Tell us a bit about your blog/podcast
It's a great long ramble from a very singular and personal perspective. I try to structure and theme myself a little, because otherwise it'd be like Eddie Izzard on a bad day. I try to apply things I've studied, learned and experienced when choosing what to talk about, I like to chat and I love to share my...thought processes and journey through TV/fandom contemplation with anyone that wants to listen.
Q: What are you favorite online Lost communities, blogs, podcasts, etc.?
I'm not exaggerating when I say I listen to every podcast out there. All of them that I can find. I couldn't choose between them, and won't, in the name of diplomacy and overall love, but I will say that the Lostaholics Rewatch, and everyone who's run it and contributed to that over this last hiatus, have really made this last few months a joy and a pleasure, rather than a drag.
Q: Tell us something interesting/scary/amusing/downright weird about how your time in the Lost fan-verse has changed your life.
I think simply podcasting is enough. I never dreamt I'd do a podcast, but I never imagined I'd be so desperate for an outlet for my babble! I hope at times it's all of the above...I had a few surreal nights being awake at 4am in Stockholm, listening to live podcasts and talking quite possibly nonsense in the chat rooms. Amazingly good fun.
Q: You’re in an elevator with someone who has never seen as much as a second of Lost. You got on in the lobby and you’re both headed to the fifteeth floor. How do you convince them to buy and watch all the DVDs before the elevator gets there?
Freakish eyes, staring, telling them very little about it, mostly saying 'You Must Watch This Show'. Perhaps with 'It's your destiny', somewhere involved. The kind of thing where they'll pass the DVD boxsets and end up buying them for the hell of it, because they have this vague recollection that they ought to...
That said, I don't think LOST is for everyone. The more you put in, the more you get out...I'm not sure if there'd be such a level of enjoyment if you didn't want to spend half your waking hours deeply contemplating Desmond's purpose, or Jack's beard.
Q: Has watching Lost sparked any creative inspiration in your life, i.e. writing, media, art, etc.?
Again with the podcasting...if that counts as creative! It makes me think about things I love - it's inspired me to go back and read tons of books I've accumulated over the years - one of the things that captured me about the show is that they appeared to have gone through my personal library and involved most of the works from it, so I didn't have to go and buy many books to do this! Also the mythology - the Greek and Roman stuff, the Bible stories, I've gone through all kinds of things I haven't read since I was a kid...
Q: How do you plan on combatting PLDS (Post Lost Distress Syndrome) or do you think we’re all destined to end up continously re-watching our Lost: The Complete Series Ultimate Box Set for the rest of our lives?
Oh, I really don't know what I'll do. I think I'll rewatch the lot at least once more, presuming I don't loathe this final season. I'm crazy excited for it, and, at the moment, I'm having trouble conceiving of a time when we will have all The Answers... I don't know if there'll be TV like this again, at least in my lifetime, so I think I'm going to focus on the here and now of the show, and try not to worry too much about what comes afterwards!
Q: What do you think will be Lost’s legacy?
I hope it'll be something that, in twenty years, people will give each other, their kids, their friends, saying, just trust me on this, watch it from start to finish, just do it. I hope it won't be something where everyone knows the end from the beginning, because the torment of five seasons with no real idea as to the end game is phenomenal, and, to my mind, this show's greatest achievement. People talk a lot about what's interesting, what's great and good in LOST, but the layers and levels of intrigue are, for me, the most incredible thing about it at all, and, also, are the aspects of the show that have thrown us all together on the internet, and given us this wonderfully deep, passionate and thriving community.
