Q: How long have you been watching Lost?
Since the beginning. I worked at Channel 4 when they bought the rights to the first series. I got told to watch it by a colleague because they thought I would absolutely love it..they were right. I got asked to do the Channel 4 Lost podcast on the back of the work I did on the Channel 4 Lost website and because I had seen the first season and the majority of the second. It seems that my Geeky status is a bit of a cheat!
Q: How did Lost get its polar bear claws into you? What about it got you hooked?
I was hooked after the second episode – We all thought it was a Jurassic Park clone after the first. You hear the noise of the smoke monster and it sounded a bit like a dinosaur which for some reason me and my friends had never been huge fans of (sorry Spielberg). But after the next was finished and there was no dinosaurs in sight, we watched the rest and bloody loved it.
Q: Favorite character?
Ben – Fantastic character and I have a feeling he still has some HUGE secrets left.
Q: Least favorite character?
I have a love hate relationship with Jack
Q: Favorite episode or season?
First episode of the second series. I waited a while to find out what was in the hatch and it was such a contrast to the living conditions and the stuff going on above ground that it blow my mind. I remember bigging it up to my friends at the time to the point where they were completely sick of it AND me.
Q: Least favorite episode or season?
I guess the episodes that didn’t really progress the story. The filler episodes like Paulo’s and Nikki’s.
Q: Are you Team Jack or Team Locke?
Shouldn’t it be: Team Jacob and team mysterious-guy-in-black-who-is-blatantly-pretending-to-be-Locke?
I’m with team mysterious-guy-in-black-who-is-blatantly-pretending-to-be-Locke. I still think Jacob is evil. I think the Damon and Carlton are playing with our preconceptions of colour denoting good and evil. I would if I was them lol.
Q: If you had to be one of the following, which would it be and why: an 815 survivor, an Other or a member of the Dharma Initiative?
An other. You get to know what the hell is going on.
Q: Which character’s demise were you most upset to see happening?
I think Charlie’s death was really well done, it brought a tear to my eye even though didn’t necessarily like him as much as Mr Eko
Q. Tell us about your video podcast.
Probably the greatest video podcast ever created…probably. It’s more of a average man on the street view, rather then a super in depth analysis picking over the show scene by scene. Although we do that sometimes if the need arises. Oh it’s on the Sky1 website after the show has aired on Friday (UK Premier). The best bit is reading out the fan theories they send in. You get some really good ones, although the odd bit of tosh sneaks it’s way in.
Q: What are you favorite online Lost communities, blogs, podcasts, etc.?
I try to stay away from other podcasts and community sites. I think there a loads of podcasts and people that have gone REALLY deeply in to the the small details of Lost and it’s hard not to read them all when your online and get your views swayed by them. You really don’t need another podcaster doing the know it all thing about the show. We get a bit of stick for not being up to date on all the big on theories but I like to watch the show with out all these preconceptions picked up from reading loads of websites.
Q: Tell us something interesting/scary/amusing/downright weird about how your time in the Lost fan-verse has changed your life.
Erm nothing has really changed my life, I could talk about a certain guy that got annoyed about a competition we ran…you might remember. He was passionate enough to create his own YouTube video complaining about how we ran it and then proceeded to plaster it around the web. I think he was sneakily doing it for media studies project. I hope he got full marks lol.
Q: You’re in an elevator with someone who has never seen as much as a second of Lost. You got on in the lobby and you’re both headed to the fifteenth floor. How do you convince them to buy and watch all the DVDs before the elevator gets there?
Probably press the emergency stop button, get out my portable video player we would watch a few episodes together…I would have a gun as well, did I mention that? I would have a gun pointing at their head.
To be honest, SOO much has happened over the series that it really can’t be bothered trying to convince people. Which is funny because everyone always expect me to be the type of person that would go round trying to convert people the teachings of Lost. If they have missed out then it’s their problem…losers.
Q: Has watching Lost sparked any creative inspiration in your life, i.e. writing, media, art, etc.?
I kinda worked on the original Lost ARG (Alternate Reality Games) on Channel 4 – very briefly and it was only on the Lost Blog with Sasha (the other girl) and updating the site with a few hidden clues and the like, nothing major.
After that I got bang in to ARGs and most of the ideas I come up with in my work life tended to be some variation of that idea. It’s getting boring now actually I should really get over them and come up with something new.
Q: How do you plan on combating PLDS (Post Lost Distress Syndrome) or do you think we’re all destined to end up continuously re-watching our Lost: The Complete Series Ultimate Box Set for the rest of our lives?
This may surprise you but there are other shows out there. I am big fan of TV in general so I normally have a lot of shows on the go at one time. I was a HUGE Battlestar Galatica fan and there is a prequel series starting now in America called Caprica which should fill the gap nicely. There always Misfits as well which is a brilliant Channel 4 comedy/drama/sci-fi show which has been re-commissioned for a second series. I will probably watch that too. Any one seen the remake of the Prisoner? that’s pretty good too.
Q: What do you think will be Lost’s legacy?
I hope its that if you have a story to tell it should have a beginning and yes…it should have an end as well. I hope they start to make shows in America that don’t go one for ages and slowly get worse over time. Maybe Lost will set a precedent and shows like Heroes will finally realise that they need to have an end in sight for the narrative to get interesting again.
