Thanks for your patience! Season 6 ROCKS!!
Previously on LOST [Pt. 1 Recap for 6.10 – “The Package” HERE] - Our losties - Camp Locke and Camp Illana are still apart and not moving. Sun pitched a fit at Richard, resisted Temptation of Locke, smacked her head and "forgot" how to speak English. Jin was bagged and tagged by Zoey and Widmore's Geek Posse, held in Room 23, and saw "pictures" of Ji Yeon for the first time. LA: Sun and Jin frolic in a posh hotel and plan to run away together. Keamy interferes (looking for Paik's cash). Sayid helps Jin escape from the kitchen pantry. Sun is shot in the ensuing scuffle. Jack works the therapy angle on Sun.
The bad news is, I totally had to split this up -- this time into THREE parts! (THAT'S how important this episode was!!). The good news is you'll get more bang for your buck because I'm finally filling in ALL the blanks I can think of. If you'd like more blanks filled in, please post your needs in the comments section below!

Part 3 Recap "Happily Ever After" HERE [4/16]

Begin Episode 6.11
_______________________________________________________________
Desmond's eyes open. A hand thumb-cranks an IV tube closed.
- Zoey: Mr. Hume. My name’s Zoey. I know you’re disoriented. You’ve been unconscious for the last three days, but you’re off the IV sedation now, and I’ve just given you a shot to wake you up.
She band-aids a small square of gauge inside his right arm.
- Desmond: Are you my nurse? Cuz yer cute! Oh wait -- I'm married! My bad.
- Zoey: You’re not in the hospital anymore Mr. Hume. We had to move you.
- Desmond: Move me – move me where? Where’s my wife?
- Zoey: No – you shouldn’t –
- Desmond: (sits up, holds right shoulder) I wanna see Penny! [NOTE: No wedding ring!]
- Widmore: I’m afraid that’s not gonna be possible, Desmond.
- Desmond: You. (to Zoey) Honey could you plug me back into the sedation please?
- Widmore: Lemme handle this.
Zoey leaves. Widmore and Desmond sit face to face on two cots.
- Desmond: What happened to me? Where am I?
- Widmore: You were shot by Benjamin Linus. Do you remember?
- Desmond: Yes, I remember. I want to talk to Penny. Penny!
_______________________________________________________________
Okay. STOP.
Raise yer hand if you can tell me why this entire scenario is completely bizarre.
Widmore answers Desmond's "what happened to me" question with "you were shot by Benjamin Linus." That implies that being shot by Benjamin is the most recent thing that's happened to him (or the most recent thing he can remember). If you're following sequence (i.e. NOT following an extrapolated timeline), Ben shoots Desmond in "Dead is Dead" (5.12). However, the last time we actually laid eyes on Desmond, he was in the hospital just outta surgery in "The Variable" (5.14). If you ARE following a timeline, then Ben shot Desmond the morning after Jack and Kate have sex ("316"). EITHER WAY it's pretty clear - the time gap between Desmond's gunshot wound and when he shows up here is problematic.
I haven't done an official day count, but I'm getting the impression that it's been more than 24 hours since Desmond got shot (on any timeline). Even if we come up with some reason how it could be possible that Desmond was still in the hospital post surgery when Widmore's peeps grab him, then why isn't his wound fresher? I mean, he almost died from what I remember. He was saved in surgery. That doesn't sound like a scratch to me. Despite favoring that shoulder when he first sits up, his gunshot wound certainly doesn't bother him enough to keep him from using that arm to attack Widmore, and after that moment, it never comes up again.
Even weirder here is the WORDPLAY. Desmond asks if Zoey is his nurse. She says he's no longer in the hospital. Now either they are talking about the hospital he was in after he was shot by Ben OR they are talking about SOMETHING else. Plus, she puts a band-aid on his arm that looks a LOT like what Sawyer, Kate and Jack pull off their arms when they first wake up on Hydra Island. It's never clear to us how long those guys were unconscious before they woke up.
She says she gave him a shot to wake him up (pretty funny since the last thing he remembers is getting shot! HAHAHAHAHA!), which is telling. Wake him up from the IV sedation I'm guessing. However, he didn't have any IV sedation when Zoey and Geek Posse Leader dragged him outta the sub. Remember Zoey says, "Of course I gave him too much." That denotes a dose of something rather than a continuous drip of sedation (which is, BTW, the type of sedation given to patients with severe physical trauma that would become worse if they were conscious. Keeping patients in a continuous coma state is used to help them recover from traumatic brain injury. Interesting). However, one thing is clear: If she had to give him a shot to wake him up, that means he was SLEEPING before she gave him the shot. Hold that thought.
ONE MORE THING: When Sayid gets some face-to-face time with Desmond, his face is NOT injured (no wedding ring, either). However, when he wakes up in the infirmary, he's all beat up. I think I remember Ben bashing his face after he shot him, but I'm not sure. Either way there's a problem. Desmond's face should have been injured when they pulled him from the submarine.
Okay, then. Back to business!
_______________________________________________________________
- Desmond: What happened to me? Where am I?
- Widmore: You were shot by Benjamin Linus. Do you remember?
- Desmond: Yes, I remember. I want to talk to Penny. Penny!
- Widmore: She’s not here. But I assure you she and your son are perfectly safe. I’m really sorry to take you away from them, but I didn’t have a chance to explain. If I had, you never would have come with me.
[Jin says Sun is "not here" to Locke. Zoey tells Jin to "relax" because "you're safe." Everyone on this island seems to want our losties to "come with me." Voluntarily joining up (being recruited) seems be to one of the rules. However, Widmore did NOT give Desmond a choice. He took him.]
- Desmond: Come with you? Come with you where?
- Widmore: I brought you back to the island.
Desmond’s face twitches with rage.
- Widmore: I can’t imagine how you must be feeling, but if you’ll give me a chance to explain –
Desmond grabs the IV stand and starts beating Widmore with it. [Notice how little that gunshot wound seems to be bothering him now. It won't bother him again the rest of this episode.]
- Desmond: I FEEL like kicking your ASS old man! I FEEL like snapping your frickin’ neck, you sadistic GEEZER!!
Desmond is tackled and restrained by two of Widmore’s droogs.
- Widmore: Dammit! Don’t hurt him! ["Dammit" has been Jack's swear word thus far, like Sawyer's has been "sonuvabitch"]
- Desmond: Take me back you sick bastard! Take me back right now you hear?!
- Widmore: I can’t take you back. The island isn’t done with you yet.
- Desmond: And I’m not done kicking yer ASS neither! Ahhhhhh!
The wordplay here is really tricky. "Take me back" is an odd phrase to use if you think about it. Widmore brought him back to the island, right? But Des doesn't say "get me outta here." Instead he says "take me back," like take me back to Penny? Take me back to LA? Take me back to where I was? What gets me is the idea that Widmore has to take him back. He can't just leave.
And "the Island isn't done with you yet" is another interesting phrase. It means that, all this time, the island has been either USING HIM or WORKING ON HIM. It also means that since he left on Penny's boat, the island has been UNABLE to USE or WORK ON him. This is another way to differentiate him from our losties because separation from the island doesn't drive him bonkers like it does the Oceanic 6. (Might be good to note he and Penny stay on the water most of the time, too.) The only other peeps I remember that can leave the island w/out going bonkers are OTHERS: Tom, Richard, Ethan and Ben. [Folks, if Desmond's not an Other, I'll eat my hat.]
Zoey, Jin and a few droogs hang out in the hallway. Widmore joins them.
- Jin: What is Desmond doing here?
- Widmore: It would be easier to show you than to tell you, Mr. Kwon. (to Zoey) Take him with you to the generator room. I’ll be along with Hume so we can start the test.
- Zoey: Charles, that-that-that test isn’t schedule until tomorrow.
- Widmore: I know when it’s scheduled. Get them ready now.
Widmore's suddenly not concerned about the timeline and Zoey is? That's the reverse of their sentiments over snatching Jin (also taken against his will). Easier to show you - We've seen this phrase used a lot too. To show someone the way is to point it out to them (as opposed to telling them where to go). Showing someone something also shifts the reality of what you're showing them to THEM. "Let me show you" implies that YOU will have to interpret what you see (Locke's Bloody Boone Vision works here, too). Ben tells Locke he wants to show him something: turns out it's Anthony Cooper!
Question for you -- by the end of this episode, does Widmore actually SHOW Jin anything? Showing implied Jin should be able to SEE something. If you were Jin, would you understand why you should cooperate after watching Desmond get zapped? (besides the fact that Widmore might put YOU in the EMF Box!) [Personally, I'm hoping Jin demands an explanation from Widmore in the next episode or two.]
This "move the test forward even if you're not ready and it doesn't follow the schedule" news does not please Zoey.
_______________________________________________________________
Zoey and Jin walk through the flood-lit facility. They pass a small, square outbuilding with four ENORMOUS cables plugged into it (two cables on each of 2 opposing sides). Let’s just call this building the EMF Box, cuz it’s easier and way more fun that way. The warehouse lookin’ building looks familiar. Maybe with from one of the missing pieces about Walt?
- Zoey: Come on [OR Kwon]. No time for sight seeing. [HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! SIGHT SEEING = seeing with your eyes. No time for that cause he'll be SEEING with his MIND.]
They enter. Widmore’s Geek Posse scrambles around the monitors, gauges and buttons. [See? I told you they were Geeks!]
- Zoey: They’re bringing Hume down. Now.
- Geek Posse Leader: What?!
- Zoey: You heard me. We are go right now. What’s your time frame?
- Geek Posse Leader: We’re not even close to being ready! This generator probably hasn’t run in 20 years! How’m I suppose to begin – [Note: if it's 2007-ish, then 20 years ago would be the late 80s, yes? Someone was using the EMF Box in the late 80s? That's interesting.]
- Zoey: Widmore doesn’t want to wait.
- Jin: What are you doing here?
- Zoey: We’re running a little test.
- Jin: What kind of test?
- Geek Posse Leader: Alright, let’s see where we are – [muddled] we get a functional EM field going people. Try a power test. The generator to full, please.
- Some Guy: (turns knobs and dials) Ok.
- Geek Posse Leader: Here we go. On my count – Three – Two – One – Power on.
Wordplay alert: Notice that this is the GENERATOR room. Desmond's flash is about to be GENERATED, get it? Plus if this is a test, then that means this is just the FIRST hurdle of the overall plan. I don't know about ya'll, but this makes me plenty nervous. EM field, of course refers to and Electromagnetic Field. The idea of a FUNCTIONAL EMF made me wonder -- functional for what function, exactly?
_______________________________________________________________
Back the fun truck up, losties. We need to think more about this electromagnetism thing.
Behold a bit of Daniel's speech from "The Variable" (collected from LOSTPEDIA):
FARADAY: In about four hours, the DHARMA folks at the swan work site--they're gonna--gonna drill into the ground and accidentally tap into a massive pocket of energy. The result of the release of this energy would be catastrophic. So in order to contain it, they're gonna have to cement the entire area in, like Chernobyl. And this containment--the place they built over it--I believe you called it "the Hatch." The Swan hatch? Because of this one accident, these people are gonna spend the next 20 years [again with the 20 years] keeping that energy at bay... by pressing a button...
Thinking that one over a bit, does this whole Swan/drill/incident thing make sense to you? First thing is the accident part. Judging from Radzinsky's behavior in "The Incident, Part 1," there was NOTHING accidental about "hitting the pocket." (Collected from LOSTPEDIA):
- RADZINSKY: Who stopped the damn drill!?
- CHANG: I did.
- RADZINSKY: Why?
- CHANG: Because when we passed seventy meters, the drill temp went up sixty degrees, and I didn't want it to melt.
- RADZINSKY: Pierre, that's why we have a truck full of water. So cool it down and turn it on.
- CHANG: Stuart, we just evacuated the Island of all nonessential personnel. We're in the midst of a possible insurrection. Do you really think this is the ideal time for your experiments?
- RADZINSKY: I've been working on this project for six years. Designing a station that'll be able to manipulate electromagnetism in ways we only dreamed of. [Dreamed of - Get it? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!]
- CHANG: Have you thought about the consequences of drilling into that pocket? We have no idea what we are gonna --
- RADZINSKY: If Edison was only worried about the consequences, we'd all still be sitting in the dark. I came to this Island to change the world, Pierre; that's exactly what I intend to do.
Daniel says that if the energy is released the RESULT would be catastrophic, and after Radzinsky shouts, "We've hit the pocket!," everything starts going crazy. It's clear that SOMETHING was released! However, AFTER they hit the pocket/tap into the energy, what's the result? Not catastrophe (ie. blow up the island and kill everyone). After sucking Juliet down the hole, it stops just fine on its own -- without external intervention. See how that works? They popped a hole in the earthly container of this energy which released it, but there was no "massive catastrophe" or leak that needed to be contained like "Chernobyl." There was no REASON to build the Swan to keep the energy at bay. It's at bay already after Juliet falls.
I think it's most likely Radzinsky designed and built the swan to utilize the energy in controlled/measured doses (Radzinsky says "manipulate"). Creating and maintaining an EMF field (at a "functional" level) to "manipulate EM" seems a VERY likely goal. If that's true, then the 108 "release" of energy could be a way to sustain a certain energy level.
Think about what Dr. Marvin Candle (aka Dr. Chang) says about the Swan in the Orientation video (From LOSTPEDIA).
. . .originally constructed as a laboratory where scientists could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the island. Not long after the experiments began, however, there was an incident. And since that time the following protocol has been observed: every 108 minutes the button must be pushed. . .
I think the question to ask here is what world was Radzinsky trying to change by manipulating EM energy? Since Jack's bomb changed NOTHING in the past, what experiments was Radzinsky conducting before "an incident?" What world is saved each time Desmond enters the code and pushes the execute button, which, we assume, maintains some kind of EMF centered on the Swan? (Good questions! I'm so proud of you! Never fear -- we'll come back to these!)
Widmore, however, isn't concerned with saving the world. He's only worried about the peeps. They will "cease to exist" if "that thing" leaves the island.
[Anyone else wondering how zapping Desmond will keep the man in black from leaving? -- Well, we find out EXACTLY how in "Everybody Loves Hugo." Want me to just tell you now? Okay, since I feel guilty about doing my taxes instead of getting my recaps finished (I'm not joking here), I'll just tell you. ZAPPING DESMOND puts him in place to RUN John Locke over with his CAR. THAT will help prevent the man in black from leaving. Oh, and Mock Locke? He is NOT MIB as we've identified him (Titus). He is CHRISTIAN!! Did it help? Do you feel better? :) (Of course I'm not joking!)]

CONTROL ROOM
Geek Posse Leader throws one of three levers, the RED one on the left. (The other two are black. COLOR interesting here.) Something revs up with a loud buzz, then quickly fades. Weirdness alert: there’s NO smoke before he pulls the lever and plenty of smoke all around him after the generator dies. That’s not too odd, I guess, for an old generator to smoke. However, watch how the smoke increases as this scene moves forward AND watch how it lingers directly on the generator. Then take note of when that smoke disappears. Interesting.
- Geek Posse Leader: Great. We’ve probably gotta faulty contact somewhere – Find it! Simmons, go down and check the circuits on the solenoids.
Jin watches the shenanigans, puzzled but not alarmed. Geek Posse Leader ponders a computer screen next to a large cage containing an ALBINO bunny. Weirdness alert: There’s a food bowl in the cage but NO WATER.
- Geek Posse Leader: Guess what Angstrom. You’re going in there next.
Angstrom props up in response. Weirdness alert. Okay, so used to own bunnies. And the way that bunny is holding up its right paw? NOT normal. Nor is it normal for a bunny to raise up and look at you when you’re talking to it. Long story short: That is the fakest lookin’ bunny I’ve seen in a LONG time! Watch carefully and observe how it moves [like a puppet even.] And just FYI: albino bunnies aren’t white. Genetically and biological speaking, they are bunnies born without pigment. They are the absence of color. What does the fake bunny mean? I dunno, but it can't be meaningless. We've seen bunnies referenced specifically in relation to Jack, Christian, Sawyer, Kate/Aaron, Ben, but those bunnies were either pictures or alive. This is a FAKE bunny (and the wrong type) passing for a "real" bunny, and it's referenced in relation to the EMF Box ("You're going in there next"). Interesting.
Simmons goes down the stairs and enters the EMF Box. He waves a little yellow thingy (that sounds a LOT like a Star Trek communicator!) over a floor to ceiling coil in the shape of a large hollow circle. There’s something mechanical inside it, but it’s hard to see. He checks a second coil (sitting opposite the first).
IF YOU DIDN'T NOTICE HOW THESE TWO COILS LOOK LIKE THE IRISES OF THE HUMAN EYE -- You weren't lookin'! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Plus there's two of them, but not side by side (on the same PLANE - Get it!). These coils are mirrored by each other. They are on separate planes, but still relative to each other. Notice how Desmond ends up centered between the two and poor Simmons is off to one side.
Zoey and Geek Possee Leader watch his progress on the viewing monitors. Interesting to note: we’ve got two opposing angles on the monitors. Check out the SMOKE – almost looks like steam – covering the generator.
- Some Guy: Found it! Bad breaker on the jetty. Bringing it back on line now.
He flips a breaker. The machine revs to life.
- Zoey: No!
On the monitor, a “heat wave” and bright lights blink and streak from both coils. Weirdness alert: I slowed this scene down, and it totally looks like Simmons doesn’t even notice when things kick on. He just keeps taking readings on his little yellow thingy. Then he freezes and his body starts kinda vibrating before his eyes close. A super bright flash of light. Simmons looks like he’s pushed back a bit toward the non-door wall. Both coils are lit up. Light flashes from one to the other in a huge burst. Simmons looks airborn! (No kidding!) One coil (our left) looks greenish blue. The other has a tint of orange. Light blurs in streaks between the coils Simmons is pressed against the back wall nearly up to the ceiling! The monitors go full static. There are faint vertical bands of varying width, and they shift back and forth, BUT the most disturbing thing is that there is something Not Cool going on in the static in the middle of the screen. Creepy!
FYI: I did some poking around (I LOVE Instant play on NETFLIX!), and we've actually SEEN the pattern we see in the static before. We've just seen it HORIZONTALLY on TV screens. One example - on Frank's TV when he's watching (fake) footage of Oceaning 815 on the ocean floor. [Name of Frank's shop? CARIBBEAN DREAMS! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!]
- Zoey: No!
The EMF Box lights up from within.
- Geek Posse Leader: Turn it off! Turn it off!
Some Guy quickly pulls the lever. The engine noise winds down. CHECK OUT the smoke hovering in a large circle in front of the generator! Weird! Zoey and Geek Posse Leader hit the ground running (Jin follows), BUT not before we notice that Angstrom’s food bowl is now on the other side of his cage. And Angstrom stays cool (and motionless) during the commotion like all good fake bunnies should!
They enter the EMF Box. Simmons lies where he stood, smokin’ like bad BBQ. Widmore at the door.
- Widmore: (calm and seemingly oblivious or unconcerned about Simmon’s smoking carcass) Zoey. Are we ready?
Widmore's lack of surprise or reaction here, AND the fact that they only threw the red lever (they throw all three to zap Desmond) tells me Simmons was another one of those "sacrifices" the island "demands" if you want something from it (Widmore tells Zoey: Get them ready). [I think They PRIMED the EMF Box with poor Simmons! One of the ways these guys gets someone killed when needed is to trick them into death. Makes sense to me.] Yes, I know Simmons is a "red shirt" killed off horribly to convey the danger of this situation for Desmond, but if he comes off as a "red shirt" or SACRIFICE (like BOONE does for LOCKE -- Boone even brings "red shirts" up!), it's not an accident AND it's a HONKIN' HUGE CLUE.
By "forcing" Desmond to "flash," Widmore is clearly breaking the rules. He even admits it/apologizes: "Sorry I had to take you, but I knew you wouldn't volunteer." Team LOST has been beating us over the head with this concept throughout Season 6. Free will is the kicker for all the heavy players working their plans on the island. You can manipulate, tempt, lie, coax -- whatever you have to do -- to get your losties to make the choice you want them to make, but you can't FORCE them to do anything against their will, ESPECIALLY the candidates. Allowing Free Will is the GOLDEN RULE of the Island.
However, if a "sacrifice" must still be made, if indeed the EMF Box must be primed somehow with the death of someone before it will work, THAT MEANS that regardless of how many RULES Widmore breaks, he STILL has to follow a set of parameters. The EMF Box process is an inflexible mechanical process. It's like, I can know all the traffic rules while I'm driving around in my car, and I can ignore them at will (and hopefully not kill myself or anyone else). However, my car won't work if I don't have a car battery. No matter how I try to work around it, the results are always gonna be the same: Too bad for me! I'm not going anywhere! I think this is what we're seeing here with the EMF Box. Now we know this world has generally agreed upon rules (that can be broken if you're a bad guy), but there are also specific parameters that CAN"T be modified. AND we know that a death must occur for this little trick to work for someone else.
Whoa. Even my brain is smoking!
Desmond is dragged to the door by two droogs. He notes Simmon’s body ("Not Cool!"). We see a close-up of poor Simmons, and he is one crispy critter! His right arm is cooked to the shoulder and his charred face and chest are STILL SMOKING. (See it now? The SMOKE emanates from Simmon's body after he's killed. BIG FAT CLUE with the smoke as connected with DEATH.)
Two droogs carry what’s left of Simmons on a stretcher. Widmore stops them. He pulls back the sheet. Simmons’ face is charred and blistered. BUT NOTE: NO more smoke anywhere on him (plenty of DOT CODES on his face, however). Desmond struggles against the droogs restraining him. Widmore covers him up.
- Widmore: You can take him how. Thank you. (to Desmond’s droogs) Put ‘im inside.
Desmond fights every step of the way as they drag him in and tie him to the chair.
- Widmore: I know how this looks, Desmond. [muddled] But everything I’ve been told about you is true, you’ll be perfectly fine. [My question is WHY will he be fine and HOW can you be so sure?]
- Droog #1: You don’t have any metal on you, do you? Keys? Change? [This is what they ask you before MRI!!]
- Widmore: (rolls eyes) Of course he doesn’t, you idiot. [Why is this guy an idiot for asking? Why is it idiotic to think Desmond might have metal on him? Des tells Jack that "my fillin's hurt" when he passes by the cement wall. What is Widmore talking about? Hm.]
Widmore faces Desmond from the corner. LOOKIT all those “dust” floaties in the light over his shoulder. THOSE are what we’re looking for during this scene. I don’t know why they are significant. I just know they have something to do with all the stationary and moving DOT CODES or just DOTS we’re starting to see more and more this season. The floaties you see behind Widmore here have shown up around our losties since Season 1. However, in Season 6, we see more of them, especially around Mock Locke (when he visits a grave-digging Ben). We get a GOOD dose of them in the WATER when Desmond saves Charlie later on in the episode. Check it: Desmond’s left eye turns green here.
- Widmore: I hate to resort to forcing this upon you Desmond. [muddled] for once it’s over, I’m going to ask you to make a sacrifice. I hope for all our sakes, you’ll help me. [Help ME. Not help US or help THEM.]
- Desmond: Sacrifice? What bloody hell do you know about sacrifice?
- Widmore: My son died here – for the sake of this island. Your wife – my own daughter – hates me. And I have never even met my grandson. But if you won’t help me Desmond, all of it will be for nothing. Penny, your son and everyone else be gone. [Yeah, I listened to it several times. That’s what he said!] Forever.
They leave. They lower the door. Desmond yells and bounces the chair around. He manages to break it and free himself. He beats against the door.
Is there any part of Widmore's last line that ISN'T weird? His son died (we're assuming he's referring to Daniel) for the "sake of this island." Note he says THIS island. They are on HYDRA Island. Yet another clue that Hydra Island has been the Golden Fleece/brass ring/end of the rainbow since the beginning. And if I'm not mistaken, Daniel's death didn't do much for the island except make sure Ellie helped Jack, Kate and Sayid get to the bomb. [It is VERY interesting to note that we DON'T see dashing Charles Widmore on the island until AFTER Daniel dies.] So how did he die for the "sake of" this island?
"All of it will be for nothing" is a tricky phrase as well. That sounds like Desmond's help is the critical step for a much larger plan that's almost complete. Up to now, it's seemed like Widmore's arrival was specifically to keep the man in black from leaving. Turns out, everything that's happened, every thing that's played out in order for "Them" (whoever they are) to reach their goal/achieve the endgame comes down to this: Desmond must willingly help Widmore by making a sacrifice.
If this is true, and Desmond's failure to help Widmore could sh&t-can the entire mission or plan, then that means Desmond has been SUPER important from day one. I have a theory about that, but I'm saving it for later. Just keep in mind: Desmond's willingness to help Widmore will decide the outcome of the entire show.
Wow. That's a pretty hefty load of important information and we're barely into the episode! Awesome!
THE CONTROL ROOM
Widmore enters. Weirdness alert: lookit the smoke all around the generator!
- Widmore: Alright. Turn it on!
- Jin: No! If you want me to help you with whatever you’re doing here, you need to explain to me –
- Widmore: That man is the only person I’m aware of in the world who has survived a catastrophic electromagnetic event. I need to know that he can do it again. Or we all die. Turn it on!
- Jin: (to himself) Whaddya mean "we," white man.
Weirdness alert: Again, what is Widmore talking about? Was turning the fail-safe key "catastrophic?" I'm still not seeing that. Plus, John, Eko and Charlie were pretty darn close to the event, too. What does that mean for them? The idea that Desmond "survived" it puzzles me too. I think Widmore is either using major wordplay here OR he's talking about something else besides the fail-safe key-turning moment. Again with the "we." Both he and Eloise are adamant: WE all die. However, "everyone WE know and love" will "be gone" or "simply cease to be." WE will die. THEY will <poof!> disappear as if they never even existed. Why does Widmore differentiate peeps like this? (I have a good theory about that too!)
Geek Posse Leader punches buttons and turns dials on the generator. The machine revs up. NOTE: The three levers are back in place – AND there’s NO MORE SMOKE. A computer monitor with several measurements (I only know I recognize an X/Y/Z axis which means measurements on a three dimensional grid) and a measurement line keeping track of TWO different things that are not in sync (looks a LOT like a EEG, doesn't it?). Desmond beats on the door and (silently for us) screams into the camera. Zoey watches anxiously. Geek Posse Leader looks back, hands at the ready on the levers. Minor smoke puffs from the generator. It floats over and around him.
- Widmore: Do we have full power?
- Geek Posse Leader: Yeah – but –
Widmore pushes him outta the way. He pulls all three levers at once with his arm. Smoke is GONE again!
Inside the Box: Desmond beats against the door.
- Desmond: Let me out!!
The control room peeps watch anxiously as the coils light up and flash with Desmond in the middle. Points of light leave his body in clusters. After a few agonizing seconds, he is lit up, suspended and spread-eagle between the coils. He has been "taken" and he falls to his back as the screen fades to white.
Now who wants to know what just happened? I'll tell you straight out. Ready? Desmond has just been forced into a flash world. When he is, however this box works, he is Tabula Rasa. All he can remember is ONE thing: GO TO THE OFFICE. And back on the island, he is just EXACTLY like Sayid. He feels nothing. He's a drone, basically, but he's got EVENT memories that belong to Desmond. Believe it or not, it makes sense for Mock Locke to pitch him into the well. Remember, Sawyer recognizes Mock Locke as NOT Locke because, and I quote: "John Locke was afraid. You're not afraid." Interesting, right?
