Well, I enjoyed using lyrics to explain my daffy thoughts last week, so I turned to my iPhone this morning to see if I got any inspiration, and lo and behold Steve Jobs sent me a song that fits my thoughts very well. Thanks, Steve Jobs, and if you see Woz over there, give him a high 5 too.
Okay LOSTalypse to the tune of Scorpions – Send me an angel with a bit of Lord of the Ring tossed in to make it rock (whoa, horse: was that Walter (John Noble) as Denethor? Why did I not know that?! #nerdfail… okay moving on from shiny things).
The wise man said just walk this way
How many times have we taken a trek across the island because someone has gotten a wild hare up their patootie and said hey lets take a walk. Locke is always taking a walk, hither and yon across the face of the island. And this time we’re getting the protectors of the candidates, supposedly the wise ones, preaching another trek across the island, across the channel to blow up the plane. Well I think the last few episodes have shown that the protectors of the candidates and the island, Ilana and Richard, know absolutely nothing, and are winging it. The island is done with Ilana, and BOOM she’s gone.
To the dawn of the light
Did you know that light is an electromagnetic wave? It’s true. How do I know? I asked google and it told me so! So while Desmond might have claimed he was bombarded by electromagnetism by Charles Widmore, the truth is we’re all being bombarded by this electromagnetism from that mass of incandescent gas, that gigantic nuclear furnace (credit TMBG). Also light can symbolically mean, inspiration. Paul’s road to Damascus confrontation with a risen Christ, literally blinded him. Also inspiration can also come from…
The wind will blow into your face
Someone blowing into you. Scripture, Paul writes to Timothy is “god breathed”, invoking the image of a rapturously loving father, breathing his love letter into the ears of his prophet’s and evangelist’s ears. A couple of people breathed into Hurley’s face, usually in the form of ghosts and dead people. Michael’s advice seems wise (don’t blow yourself up!) also seems to fit into the plans of the man with the visage of John Locke (the plane is the ticket off the island!). And Libby, who is dead on the island, but vibrantly alive in the sideways timeline. This isn’t the same ghost Libby that spooked Michael in the hospital scaring him into doing Benjamin Linus’ bidding. This seems more an interpolation of the Libby that was about to go on her first date with Hugo. The final inspiration of the breath of life, breathed into Hugo with a kiss, that returns to sideways Hugo, the island memories of Hurley.
As the years pass you by
We’re stuck in this discrepancy, this sideways timeline has us three years backwards from the on island date after the crash of Ajira, like the years of strife and struggle our heroes experienced on the island have vanished in a thermonuclear explosion of sorts. They’re left in a different world, a different place, without all the “stuff” that, “wasn’t all bad, Jack!” as Kate so succinctly put it.
Hear this voice from deep inside
Jack’s still working on it, his inner voice on the island has seen that his brokenness that he acknowledge as his reason for returning, is this addiction to fixing things. Since his arrival on the island, that’s been the siren call for Jack to come fix this, come fix that. John Locke even thrust him into this leadership role, that Jack always wanted, but was ill prepared to assume. Jack’s planning skills were always questioned by his followers, although they put their trust in him. Now it’s his turn to pay it forward, and trust Hurley.
It's the call of your heart
If there’s one person’s heart that is pure, who’s moral compass hasn’t swirled in circles like the hand of a magnetic compass passing over the well of insanity that Desmond was tossed into, it’s Hugo Hurley Reyes. The one person on the island that can’t lie, the whole travels off island and the necessity of lying, drove him crazy. Telling the truth to his mother, and continuing to tell the truth has been the path that has kept Hurley on track. This little deceit that Hugo told Richard that Jacob told him too, didn’t stay hidden long, and his confession to Jack, was a huge moment. Just as Jack’s confession of brokenness to Hugo was a huge moment in Lighthouse. If there is anyone on the island, that we can put our trust in, it’s Hugo.
Close your eyes and your will find
Hugo’s sideways memories were rediscovered when he closed his eyes and accepted Libby’s kiss, a revelation that opened his eyes. Closing our eyes helps us to center ourselves, you can count to five if you want to settle yourself, let in the fear, then decide to carry on with you plan of action. Closing eyes is also the opposite of the opening montage of LOST, with close ups of eyes opening in strange places. Will the end of LOST end with an eye-closing? Will that be the key to let us realize that our heroes have finally found what they’re searching for longingly?
The passage out of the dark
Ghost Michael pointed Hurley in the direction of Locke. It was as if the darkness of the jungle was peeled away, and we saw the fires around the Ewoks…er … I mean Fake Locke’s campground. Here is what the next step was, both sides knew it was coming, Locke was waiting for the final three candidates to show up, and Hurley, Sun and Jack showed up, the only outsider was Frank Lapidus. Hm.
Here I am - Will you send me an angel
So, we’re set. The ending scene has our heroes (with the exception of Jin) eye to eye for the first time since before Ben moved the island. The angels have arrived, Jack’s momentary glance at Kate, Kate’s truly happy smile back, Jack’s adoring returning grin has Jaters everywhere singing hallelujah. Are they each other’s angels? Who needs angels? Angels, are God’s messengers, those who can pass along God’s inspiration, and loving guidance and direction.
Here I am - In the land of the morning star
Uh… Uh-oh… Do you remember? Morning Star? Not the rising of the sun? but Lucifer?
*FOOM*
Next week we’ll be knee deep in reviewing the Jack – Fake Locke over the top rope Battle Royale! Will you be ready for it? And what was with our angel Desmond, taking on angel of Death qualities by driving over dear defenseless John “The Substitute” Locke. Man, it looked like John just fell from an 8 story building.
Talk back in the comments.
