The Candidate: On the Lighter Side

"One is dark, one is light."

OK, so I was thinking about my earlier post today and realized that I may have left you, the reader, in a bit of a dark place. I mean, sure, evil is real; sure, bad things happen, but there is always hope...right? Right? Of course there is. Another tenet of the Christian faith (which I am an adherent and LOST draws analogies from) is the fact that even though the world has a present evil (the Bible even calls Satan "the god of this world") there is a very good and all powerful being who is still in control. Enter Jacob (OK, I'm admitting this is a maybe, but it's fun...so hush).

Jacob reminds me a lot of another one of my favorite fictional characters. His name is Aslan...and he is a lion Yes, the beloved King of Narnia from C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia. In one of the most well known exchanges in all seven books, this conversation happens between the Pevensie children and Mr. and Mrs.  Beaver in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe:
"That you will, dearie, and no mistake," said Mrs Beaver; "if there's anyone who can appear before Aslan without their knees knocking they're either braver than most or else just silly."

"Then he isn't safe?" said Lucy.

"Safe?" said Mr Beaver; "don't you hear what Mrs Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you."

I don't know about you, but I am starting to get a very "not safe, but good" feeling about Jacob. You can debate that in the comments section if you'd like (personally, I'd love to hear your thoughts about Jacob, especially as they relate to that strange boy running around the woods that gets older every time we see him). Speaking of that little boy, did you notice back in season one, when Claire had her vision of white eye/black eye Locke, that there was a quick shot of a little boy running through the woods? Interesting. Anyway, could it be that Jacob has really been in control the whole time? I hope so. But bad things wouldn't happen if he was, right? Right? Back to Narnia.

In The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Narnia was thrown into a perpetual winter by the White Witch. We are told it was "always winter, never Christmas" (great imagery by Lewis). Even though Narnia was really under the control of the witch, we are reminded over and over that she isn't the real ruler, only thinks she is. I think this is where MiB is right now. Just like in Narnia, MiB has killed his nemesis. Like Aslan, Jacob seemed to offer up his life voluntarily. Will Jacob return as Aslan did? Yes. If not literally, then allegorically through his replacement. Like the White Witch, I believe the MiB will be taken off guard by a defeat that he did not think was possible.

Namaste.
