EXCLUSIVE: Interview with the Swan Station Computer!

image We here at LOSTblog have been very fortunate to score some great fan videos, but this opportunity came out of the blue.  Turns out that the Swan Station computer was looking for something to do after his stint on LOST was finished, and agreed to help us out here.  You’ve seen him pop-up announcing posts for the last couple of days, here.  This morning I decided to sit down and interview him.

LOSTblog: Good morning, may I call you Hatchy?

Uh, sure. Whatever. You couldn't pronounce my real name anyways. So uh, thanks for letting me do something around here.

LOSTblog: Thanks. So could you tell us a little bit about yourself.

Well, I'd like to take this opportunity to explain that while the world thinks of “the Hatch computer” as an Apple III monitor sitting atop a Apple ][ Plus computer.  That was really just a great makeup job.  The computer prop wasn’t  even working, the screen was just a green screen.  I’m actually a highly advanced Video Display Terminal that has worked extensively in the entertainment industry for many years.  The job on LOST was great fun, because I have a bit of a yearning for computer history and to play the role of an Apple III terminal was a dream I’d had for a long time.

LOSTblog: Oh, so can you tell use what other roles you’ve had?

Oh sure.  Well I also really enjoyed playing two roles in the movie War Games.  Matthew and Ally were great fun to interact with.  Also the movie You’ve Got Mail was a treat, Tom and Meg are such genuine people.  Also I’ve done some work in 24, and pick up gigs here and there playing all sorts of video technology.

LOSTblog: Do you have any other associates in the industry that you admire?

Well one friend that really has lucked out is Obama’s teleprompter.  He’s a really low key guy, and not used the attention he’s gotten, it’s a tough job, but he’s doing a good job.

Another guy I really look up to is 3D-VDT.  He did a stellar job in Avatar, really made that movie work, he doesn’t get the attention of the other headliners, but he comes off as really believable. He’s also been in Minority Report, and has a recurring role as the “Anginator” in the television series Bones.  You’d think he’d be a prima donna, but he’s really down to earth, thankful for his creator (some engineer at TI), and just is glad to be able to put his talents to work in the entertainment industry.

LOSTblog: What were some of your favorite moments working in LOST?

I loved all my scenes with Terry O’Quinn.  He was so fun to interact with.  He’s also a really good chess player.  That scene in the Flame station was actually a real game we were playing between takes, when he won the directory decided to use that scene in the episode.  I’d like to say I let him win, but he really had me stumped.

Also interacting with Henry Ian Cusick was great.  I can’t understand a word that cat says, but he was fun to work with.  The whole cast was fun, Evie, Harold, Adewale.  Great bunch of people.

LOSTblog: Do recall any other special moments?

Well one scene with Harold Perrineau was hilarious, because I totally caught him by surprise.  It was the scene where he’s interacting with Malcom (Walt) via interactive chat.  I totally pulled a Snoop Dog on him, and he spent 20 minutes cracking up.  The whole crew was laughing.  It was funny.

LOSTblog: Snoop Dog? Can you do an impression ?

Surizzle Hizzle how arizzle you doizzle I'm glizzle to mizzle you. Plizzle thizzle computizzle on LOST wizzle a wondizzle expizzle

LOSTblog: Um. Thanks.  I’m sure it was one of those you had to be there moments.  Moving on, Do you have a role in the upcoming season?

I can’t really comment on that.  Sorry.

LOSTblog: Okay, thanks so much for taking the time to sit down with me, and for all your help here at LOSTblog?

You’re welcome, a guy’s gotta keep busy while we’re waiting for SkyNet to go active.
