Staying Lost After Lost by ErinAva – Tabula Rasa

I really enjoyed recapping this week's episode.  Be sure to look out for Amy's Recap too!   They are mind blowing!  This was the episode of Lost that hooked me.  Sure, the Pilot was amazing but this was the story that really took me over.  I was drawn to Kate in the Pilot from the moment she sewed up Jack.  She is my favorite character.  And it was very interesting to learn her story.  This flashback-type storytelling had never really been done before and it kind of amazed me when I realized that this was how the story was going to go.

Kate's story was intriguing.  You know she did something bad but you can also tell that she is a sweet and caring person.  She doesn't seem "dangerous" on the island and the fact that she gets caught because she was saving Ray (again, with the fake arm? haha) shows that she isn't really some ruthless fugitive.  I really liked how they presented the two sides, light and dark, within the characters.  Really great storytelling.  It was really cool to see this dark side of Kate.  She was such a different person in the beginning than she was in the end.  It seems like she really took what Jack said to her at the end of the episode to heart.

Jack: "Three days ago we all died. We should all be able to start over."

Tabula Rasa: Latin - blank slate.

Jacob to Richard in Ab Aeterno: ."...And when they get here, their past doesn't matter."

This idea of a fresh start to me is a "Lost Axiom" (phrase completely stolen from Three Dudes Talking).  Once you crash on the island, the first thing you need to do is let go of your past.  And most of them did.  If you don't, you end up like Nikki and Paolo (obsessing over the diamonds, from their past, dead!)

Another thing about this comment by Jack is that it is very "Jacobian" (word completely stolen from @WhimsyandQuirk).  I believe that this is where they were really setting up the two sides to be lead by Jack and Locke.  In the scenes very closest to the end of this episode, you have Jack being very Jacob-like to Kate while they sit on the beach and then, you have Locke staring at Walt and Vincent very creepily while they play eerie music, very MIB like.  Again, they knew what they were doing the whole time.  This episode reflects Season 6 in a big way.  All the way down to Jack and Hurley being a duo.

This episode sets the ground work for the entire series here.  They establish the story's roots here:  Sawyer and Jack's conflict begins in the fuselage, Jack's need to fix is manifested in the need to make sure the marshal gets better, just to name a couple. They were also clearly developing a special story for Walt.  And I would give anything to find out what that was!  He stopped the rain!  That would have been an interesting story.  I'm kind of sad he grew!

Like I said before this episode was one of my favorites of all time.  But now that I watched it again with all of the pieces aligned I can see that it was a really very important episode for the foundation of the entire show.  I am having fun with this re-watch already!  Until next time, Namaste.
