This was a great TweetUp... It seems the Locke episodes are heavily salted with big mythos, large storylines that weave through the whole series. After Walkabout where we see Locke was paralyzed on the island, Locke has been present as the resident island guru, talking Jack though accepting the mantle of leadership, helping Charlie with his Heroin addition, even guiding Sawyer on a boar hunt. He's found the ominous hatch with the help of Boone, has excavated around it, exposing its huge shape, but its mysteries are still impenetrable. Much like the final mysteries of LOST going into the final season, we can discern the shape but we don't really know what's on the other side of the bright flash of light.Deus Ex Machina, the title of the episode, means literally God from the Machine and Wikipedia defines it as:
...is a plot device in which a person or thing appears "out of the blue" to help a character to overcome a seemingly insolvable difficulty.
Scroll down through the transcript to read some closing thoughts on this phrase, but since I'm writing, I'll twist in my perceptions (not fully agreed on by the WFTBers). The opening scene has John Locke in a toy store explaining the game of Mousetrap to a young boy:
LOCKE: Well, you start with all these parts off the board. And then, one by one, you build the trap - shoe, bucket, tub - piece by piece it all comes together. And then you wait 'til your opponent lands here on the old cheese wheel. And then if you set it up just right, you spring the trap.
My first thoughts are, wow, that kinda explains the whole 'loophole' that the MiB had to setup. The 'deus' that happens in this episode isn't as Rube Goldberg as a mousetrap, its more the dream that John Locke has after his trebuchet shatters against the glass of the hatch. Showing this yellow cessna fall out of the sky and holding the key to what Locke needs to open the hatch (or so we're lead to believe). Instead the 'deus' we've expected per the title is nothing more than a Mousetrap as the plane crashes and Boone is critically injured. You can almost hear Blackie cackling in delight as he's eliminated a variable.
