The plot centered around Shannon's inability to breath thanks to an asthma attack and using the last of her inhaler. Boone knew there was another in her luggage, but they hadn't found their bags. Sawyer, however, was reading Boone's book (Watership Down), and in a fit of Holmesian logic *snap* it musta been Sawyer. The camp loves to hate Sawyer so soon the mighty brain trust of Sayid, Kate and Jack were centered on the *fact* that Sawyer must have taken the inhaler and was holding it for his personal gain.
Sawyer's backstory revealed that his off island life was a that of a Confidence Man, Con Man, skallywag. The interplay between backstory and island story revealed that Sawyer (if that is his REAL name) became a con man, despite a life long quest to get revenge on a con man that destroyed his family.
In the end, Shannon's breathing returns to normal despite the efforts to torture the location of the inhaler from Sawyer (and Sawyer did finagle a kiss from Kate, the skallywag), when Sun used some crushed eucalyptus leaves to re-open her spasming airways. But how much relational damage was done to Jack-Sayid-Sawyer? How much of that was played out by our favorite guru, Locke, lying to Sayid about how he got hit in the head?
