The Esau Theory

The season five finale was a game changer. Lost is famous for giving us the kind of mind blowing season finale that does this, year after year. That’s considerably harder and harder to accomplish given the standards that the show itself, has set up for us to compare it to. For the last episodes leading up to the finale, the writers were building up a tremendous amount of tension and theorizing by the fans. The focus of that buildup was all centered on the ability to change fate and whether or not they would actually explode a hydrogen bomb. By the opening minute of “The Incident” I had forgotten all about the bomb. By the sounds of the podcasts this week, I am not alone. They turned the tables on us once again. I think at this point many of us are less distracted by the outcome of a hydrogen explosion on Destiny island, than we are determining the identity of the man in the black shirt. You can call him Jacob’s enemy. I like Nemesis. But I also belong to the group of fans that can’t help but wonder if this man’s name is Esau.

Comparisons between the Biblical Jacob and Esau and our island version

Jacob and Esau were the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah. Rebekah favored Jacob and Isaac favored Esau. Rebekah helped Jacob con his father out of Esau’s blessings. These blessings seem to have mystical properties and value. Esau was the eldest twin and Jacob held on to his heal to have Esau doing the work of pulling both of them out. Jacob’s name means ‘grabber’ and ‘cheater’. Esau was covered in hair. Jacob’s mother once had him con his blind father by dressing himself in goat’s fur to simulate Esau’s hairy skin. The first time we see ‘Jacob’ sitting in the cabin he has long wavy hair. I believe it was never Jacob in the cabin. It was Nemesis. Esau was starving one day in the field. Jacob offered to bring him some pottage (soup) if he would give him all his rightful inheritance in trade. Esau agreed, thinking his inheritance is of no value if he died of starvation. Esau was considered a hunter, Jacob stayed home, perhaps comparable to a farmer. We have had the running theme of hunter vs. farmer when it comes to Locke’s self image. Esau often would present his father with offerings of venison and other kills. When faux Locke comes in to Richard’s camp he is carrying a boar over his shoulders and presents it to them. In the opening beach scene Jacob is eating the fish that he has prepared for himself. He offers some to Nemesis, but he refuses, stating, “Thank you. I just ate.” One could either liken that to the fact that the Biblical Esau was a hunter and usually had food in hand. Or you could take that, as the sting from him remembering what happened the last time Biblical Esau accepted food from his brother. They were twin brothers. I would argue that in the Bible, Jacob was the bad twin. On Lost we find the Gary Troupe manuscript of his latest book, entitled “The Bad Twin”. Jacob inherited his father Isaac’s blessings. For a time other people grew jealous of Isaac’s good fortune and drove him off of his lands claiming that Isaac’s water wells belonged to them. The family always acquiesced and moved on, only to find good fortune everywhere they went. Finally realizing that Isaac had God’s blessings, and fearing God’s wrath, the King came to Isaac to bargain a peace treaty. The Philistines grew jealous of Isaac’s wells and filled them with earth until that treaty. The well on the island was eventually found to be filled with earth and rocks. After realizing that Jacob had conned Isaac out of all of Esau’s rightful blessings as the first born, Esau went to his father to beg that he might find some blessing to bestow upon him. This was all Isaac could manage, Gen. 27:40 “you shall hew your way with your sword. For a time you will serve your brother, but you will finally shake loose from him and be free.” Esau threatens to kill Jacob, and Rebekah sends Jacob away to protect him. While on the run to a safer land Jacob sleeps one night with a rock for a pillow. He dreams of a ladder between that spot and Heaven. When he awakens he sets the stone headrest upright, like a memorial pillar and names the spot Bethel, or “house of God”. The island has a large stone pillar that we saw Anthony Cooper tied to. All of Lost is built on Daddy issues. The story of Jacob and Esau is rife with Daddy and Mommy issues. The father seems to take a more prominent role though, in my opinion. They were both vying for there Dad’s, as well as God’s, approval, blessings and rewards. Jacob stays away for 20 years. While he is gone he marries two women. Despite fertility problems, they have 12 children. One of those sons is named Benjamin. Aaron, brother of Moses was also descended from this line of Jacob.

Malachi 1:2-3 I have loved you, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the Lord: yet I loved Jacob. And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

Malachi 3:16-18 Then they that fear the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

Ok, first of all, isn’t it interesting that in a book that references Jacob and Esau, verse 3:16 basically says God made a list of the good ones. And then just to hammer that point home, verse 18 basically says “you shall return and discern between the good guys and the bad guys.” I would encourage further study of all of Malachi. It’s just 2 & 1/2 pages long. Genesis books 25-50 deal with Jacob’s story in greater detail.

A new look at previous occurrences on the island with Jacob vs. Nemesis insight.

I think it’s quite possible that Smokey is Nemesis, or at least linked to him. Smokey seems unable to get past water. We have never seen him on Hydra island, perhaps because he cannot get past it in that form. Ben drained water out of a portion of the tunnels to summon him as if that water was a barrier that he could not breach. When flight 316 arrived on Hydra island it seems a fair assumption that Nemesis was not alive. It would seem unlikely that his spirit could leave his living body and then either enter or replicate the body of John Locke. When the fake John Locke first emerged from flight 316 he did two things, and immersed himself in the enjoyment of them. He stood in the water and later he ate a mango. He said it was the best mango he had ever eaten. No doubt he was simply enjoying the corporeal act of eating. He had not done this in a long time as he had not fully lived in a long time. The same could be said about standing in the water, or it could simply be that he was not able to be in the water, as Smokey, and was finally enjoying it now. I think all the apparitions/visions can be attributed to either Jacob or Nemesis. That is why we have been getting contradictory messages. I think island Christian was always either Jacob or Nemesis. If I had to choose one, it would be Nemesis. Maybe Jacob has a healing touch and Nemesis has a death touch. We have seen Jacob heal. We have heard that Ben negotiated to have him heal Juliet’s sister Rachel. Perhaps it was the force of Nemesis that made Ben have a tumor or even Jack have appendicitis. When Locke fell through the well to the frozen donkey wheel tunnels, he broke his leg badly. When Christian appeared to him, Locke asked him to help him up. Perhaps he refused because he needed Locke to live until he could bring Nemesis’ plan to fruition. If he is the opposite of Jacob then touching him might have killed him. We know that Jacob’s touch can heal. We saw him heal both Locke (partially) from the 8 story fall, and Ilanna from her mystery ailments. I think he may be responsible for all the mysterious healings both on island and off: On island - Locke, Rose and Aaron (in the womb); Off island Sarah Shepherd, Carole Littleton, Michael Dawson (from 2 car accidents), Locke (fall & car accident), Emily Locke, and Anthony Cooper. Anthony said the last thing he remembered after his car accident was a paramedic over him in the ambulance, smiling at him. I used to think that was Richard, but now I think it was Jacob. I think that all the bad things that have happened to Locke, to take away his faith, were likely caused by Nemesis. Jacob and Nemesis talked on the beach about things ending only once. They talked about people as if they were judging them, “They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt.” Perhaps they are testing people just as God and Satin tested Job. I think all the mixed messages that Locke received from both Jacob and Nemesis put him in the vulnerable position that lead to his death. I think Jacob was giving Locke the positive, belonging feeling that Locke felt for his destiny on the island. I think that Nemesis caused the manipulations and cons that he endured via Ben Linus. And on that note, I think the only communication that Ben ever got from the real Jacob was through Richard. I think the cabin had nothing to do with Jacob. Jacob was never trapped, as we had all suspected. On the contrary, Jacob was traveling all over the real world, perhaps as far back to the 19th century, to gather the Black Rock crew to come to the island. And Jacob talked to Hurley only a few days prior, on the day of the flight for 316. I think each flashback we saw with Jacob visiting one of our islanders, could be said to be moments that lead to there coming to the island. No, Jacob was not trapped in that cabin. It was never Jacob’s cabin. It was Nemesis’ cabin. Nemesis was trapped there by the circle of ash (or whatever the substance is). I think once the circle was broken, it freed him, perhaps in ways we don’t understand yet. I think any direct messages that Ben might have received would have been from Nemesis. I think the infamous, “Help me” was Nemesis, not Jacob.

I look forward to seeing what other theories the community comes up with over the next eight months. As someone said this week, even if we guess the real answer to this riddle of a show, the writers are sure to layer other themes and mythologies over it in ways we would never come up with. This show is like an ever changing feast. I can’t wait until season six to see what new flavors we get to dive into. Bon appetit!

TIR’s Observations: “The Incident”

theincident010Yes, it’s finally over for the season, and what a way to end it! I was captivated for the complete two hours, finding myself in total absorption. When I went back over the episodes again in the morning I did find some things worth mentioning. So, for the last time this season, here we go!

The meeting of Jacob and “the Man in Black”. I’m going to shorten his name to an acronym, MIB, just to keep it simple. I know other fans are using different names for him, such as Esau, but I like the connotation, since I think it speaks about his character, too. He’s there to talk to Jacob about the Black Rock sailing towards shore. “You’re still trying to prove me wrong, aren’t you? They come, they fight, they destroy, and they corrupt. It always ends the same.” MIB’s attitude toward humanity is dark and miserable with no hope of change. That, although we have free will, it really is a waste since all we do is succumb to our dark nature. Jacob, however, is the optimistic one. “It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.” To me, it carries the possibility of hope. Jacob believes that despite our carnal and savage nature, there also resides within us the possibility of progress and change. And it appears that this outlook also irritates MIB, for he conveys to Jacob his desperate desire to kill him. He warns Jacob of a future loophole that will allow him to finally get rid of him, and Jacob responds simply, “When you do, I’ll be here.” And we see later on in the episode that indeed, Jacob has been waiting for the “loophole” to arrive. One thing to note, Jacob’s tapestry has two sentences on it that have been translated to read, “May the gods grant thee all that thy heart desires”, and, “May the gods grant thee happiness”. Both of these quotes are used in Homer’s Odyssey but are also similar to sayings used in the Bible. They are uplifting and positive, which I believe is Jacob’s true nature.

Jacob meeting the Losties. Although they appear quite innocuous, there are some interesting things to note. First, that Jacob makes physical contact with each and every one of them using his hand. And secondly, that Jacob’s use of this touch along with what he says to them shows us perhaps how much he cares about our Losties. Thirdly, there is the different time frames in which each of them are visited, and one has to question whether Jacob decided one day to go back to several points in time and visit with them or whether he actually visited them as time occurred. I’m of the opinion that WHEN he meets them, HOW he meets them, and WHAT he says to them is very important. I also think it’s important to note those people he DIDN’T visit.

Sayid, Jack and the hydrogen bomb. Ok, this one folks has me a bit skeptical, not because I don’t think Sayid is an international man of mystery, but how does an Iraqi know so much about thermonuclear devices when we all KNOW that his country had no WMD’s? I also find it amusing that Sayid gives a two hour window of moving the device to the Swan sight in order to achieve Daniel’s plan without ANYONE having a watch or clock nearby. Just how does Sayid, who just showed up out of the jungle, know when Daniel’s timetable started?

Richard Alpert, the Egyptian consiglieri. Apparently, adviser to the leader is a widely defined job role with one significant requirement. He must do whatever the leader wishes without argument. So this explains why he stepped in front of the loaded guns aimed at Eloise and why he knocked her out to save her and her unborn Daniel from the hydrogen blast. It explains why he followed Ben’s leadership decisions, and now Locke’s. Even though he knows Locke was murdered and that “Dead is Dead”, he begrudgingly follows Locke’s wishes of taking them to see Jacob. This must be part of the deal he made with Jacob. I guess having that chat with Jack near the Jughead when Jack tells Richard, “not to give up on” John Locke didn’t help matters. He must have really wanted to curse out loud when he saw the real Locke roll like a dead lump of coal out from the metal tabernacle!

“If Edison was worried about the consequences, we’d all be sitting in the dark.” Radzinski’s zeal to continue to drill into that pocket is amazing, considering all the things going on around him. And quite frankly, the above quip that shuts up Pierre Chang is just bizarre. I didn’t realize that my son’s night light came at such a price! Had I known Thomas Edison invented the light bulb under such life threatening circumstances I would be writing these observations with a gas lantern and ink pen! There is obviously something PUSHING him to this event. I’d love to find out what it is!

John “the doppelganger” Locke. Well, we sure did notice something different about him these past few episodes. Who’d of thought it was because he’s NOT John Locke! As someone who has researched just about every word that has come out of his mouth, I was a bit skeptical of John being the courageous hunter again back on the island. He’s always been the dupe, the rube, the conned. I just never figured him for a ZOMBIE!!!

Ilana and Bram. I’m a bit confused about them, to be sure. They apparently know the island’s geography for they do not need a map or compass to get from the beach to Jacob’s cabin and then onward to the statue. This is interesting because Richard does not know who they are as they approach the statue. But she knows him, in particular, by his full name Ricardus. They also appear to be working in the best interest of Jacob, who visited Ilana in the hospital in Russia despite the nurse warning Jacob of her “condition”. She is obviously disfigured, perhaps from a chemical accident or burn. Chernobyl? Although Ilana recognizes Jacob from her past, he does not take off his black gloves to touch her like he did with the Losties. Could she be something like John the doppelganger?

The ‘shipper quadrangle has some really wobbly sides, doesn’t it? Actually, what I mean to say is that they are really wacked out, double talking, confusingly moronic sides. First, there’s Jack. We find out that the real reason Jack wants to blow up the nuke to change the past is because of Kate. Because he lost her and he says it’s too late to get her back. But when Sawyer tells him that if he changes the past he may never see her again, he responds, “If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.” My mind actually had to reboot when I heard that. Because it completely contradicts his earlier conversation. How can you say “if it’s meant to be” and then go off and blow up an entire island killing everyone in the vicinity just to get a second start with Kate? They are conflicting statements. Let me say this, too: It sure does seem like blowing up the island falls into MIB’s “they come, they fight, they destroy” scenario. And of all the people Jacob visited, Jack’s was the most impersonal with the least amount of contact.

Next we have Juliet. First she wants off the sub to save the island from Jack’s plan. Then she flips and takes Jack’s side saying they HAVE to do this. And her reason? Because if she never meets Sawyer, she’ll never have to lose him, even though she admits that Sawyer would stay with her forever if she let him. And again, I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL. I’m sorry, but did anyone else have trouble buying what she was saying? You can obviously see that Sawyer is as loyal to her as a golden retriever. He has said as much. Yet she wants to blow up everybody just because of a sideways glance. Are we watching Grey’s Anatomy here?

Then there’s Kate. I can’t even try to understand her character or her logic or her ping-pong behavior. She just needs to just go away.

The payback of Ben Linus. Here we are watching the greatest manipulator we’ve ever seen on television get played like a Stradivarius violin. Now, I am not one who normally has schadenfreude, but it was spectacular. I once wrote that to be a villain, one must have “wickedness of mind, selfishness of character and will to power. You can be horribly evil or grandiosely funny, but ultimately tragic.” I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Ben Linus, but you can be sure what he ended up doing beneath the shadow of the statue was indeed tragic.

It was good to see Rose, Bernard and Vincent living in their love shack by the beach. Not much to say here, but it looks like retirement has been good for them. A bit too good by the looks of the added pounds on Bernard! Maybe they could steal a treadmill from Dharma the next time they’re out scavenging for food. One thing to say, though, it appears as if they are living exactly like MIB said couldn’t be done. They don’t seem to be fighting, destroying, or corrupting. Could this be a sign that LOVE conquers our dark destiny of failure?

Jacob’s cabin. I’m starting to get the idea that perhaps the ash was not to keep Jacob confined within its perimeter, but to keep the darkness of the jungle OUT. Could Jacob have used this as a safe zone within the jungle as a meeting place with the Others without compromising his true sanctuary at the statue? Could the ash be some sort of deterrent from MIB and/or the Smoke Monster?

Sayid’s gut shot. Does anyone find it interesting that with all the struggles everyone has gone through, that the Losties just watch Sayid as he bleeds out against the back of the Jeep? No one holds his hand, no one makes him comfortable, no one gives him water, and many of them just seem to ignore him. I love the Lost characters, but I didn’t like Kate, Jin and Hurley at that moment very much. And since they used the Jeep as part of the rescue mission down at the Swan (“live together, die alone”), I guess they just left Sayid lying on the ground to die. With Hurley. Nice.

Hurley the “blessed”. The longest conversation Jacob has with those off island is with Hugo Reyes and it may be the key to what’s headed for us next season. There is something very special about Hurley compared to the others of Flight 815 who became his friends. Everyone else was visited by Jacob YEARS before the present time. But Hurley is visited by Jacob within 24 hours of flight 316’s departure. I think that that this timing and what Jacob says to Hurley is VERY IMPORTANT.

The knife. Does anyone find it interesting that the thing that young Locke picked out as a child that alerted Richard to his NOT being special is exactly what was used to finish off Jacob? I also remember a very telling conversation Locke had with Ben in the Orchid right after Ben stabs Keamy in the chest. (MIRROR IMAGE ANYONE???) Locke looks at Ben and says,”Why did you kill him when you knew it would destroy the boat?” and Ben replies, “Well, John, I really wasn’t thinking straight. Sometimes… good command decisions get compromised by bad emotional responses… I’m sure you’re gonna do a much better job of separating the two than I ever did.” I guess that would be the understatement of the year!

Enjoy your hiatus everyone! And don’t make Lostaholics a stranger these next few months for there are some fun things on the horizon to keep us all connected. Namaste!

TTMG: Follow The Leader

normal_leader-643In comparison with the other episodes this season, I didn’t feel this episode was as strong in its delivery as those shown previously, but that’s not say that it didn’t hold valuable information and insight into what the finale may bring.  I think that throughout this show, up to and including this episode, Lost has been consistent in character portrayal, storyline continuation, and giving us answers at the appropriate time (even though most of us have wanted them sooner).

In Follow The Leader, we are given a two-part story:  one told from the perspective of what is going on around Richard in 1977, and one told from the perspective of what is happening around him in 2007.  Both stories are showing similar themes of overthrown leadership and either preventing or causing the death of someone or something on the island.  In 1977, Sawyer, Juliet, Kate, Miles, Hurley, Jack, Sayid, and Jin are uncertain of their fate as they all work collectively to avoid the potential dangers of the site that the future Swan hatch will exist on.  In 2007, John and Ben have found Richard and the Others.  John explains that he has a purpose for being there, and after leading Richard to his past-self by the Beechcraft that has a bullet-wound in his leg, John reveals that his next agenda is to lead the beach-dwelling Others on a trek to meet Jacob.  John also divulges his agenda of killing Jacob.

I also have to admit that there were some things that bothered me about this episode.  Through all of the character developments we’ve witnessed and the overcoming of past issues, I was disappointed to see that Kate has her instinct of running away again.  I realize we saw this first this season when it was discovered by an outsider that Aaron wasn’t her child, but, to me, I can see that as a normal response to that situation.  In this episode, however, Kate decides that she does not want to be a part of the mission to the Jughead and winds up being a prisoner of the Dharma Initiative instead.  One would almost have to question what the real decision was that she was trying to make:  escaping the nuclear bomb or escaping the miserable Jack.  But the really big problem I’m having with Kate since her arrival on the island is that there has been no mention of Claire.  Her “purpose” in giving Aaron up and returning to the island was to bring Claire back to him and she seems to have forgotten that mission.  I’ll even give her the excuse of landing in a time that she had no way of anticipating, but doesn’t she ever think to ask Richard in all of her dealings with him?  I also am finding that I’m not as big of a Sayid fan as I used to be, although that could just be me getting used to his absence in the last few episodes.  I just didn’t “get it” that he had been watching Jack and Kate enough to know that they were heading for danger, but he wasn’t observant enough to know that Kate had just taken that route days before with a dying Ben.  Maybe in future episodes Sayid will have a chance to recount his time away from the group, similar to that of Michael in Season 2.

normal_leader-478While observing the events of Follow The Leader, there were a few things that I found myself questioning.  In all of Eloise’s bewilderment about killing her future son, she finds proof of this fact in seeing her own handwriting in Daniel’s journal from 2004.  This journal is complete with calculations, equations, notes, drawings, and every life experience Daniel has had through his work in the field of science.  It also contains maps to various locations on the island and a chart of timelines.  The Ellie of 1977 tucks this filled journal away before swimming down to the tunnels.  Does Ms. Hawking have this journal in 2007 when she advises that Jack and the rest should return to the island?  And if this answer is yes, is this how she has known things about Desmond?  The big reveal at the end of The Constant was a notation in that journal that reads,  “If anything happens, Desmond will be my constant.”  In putting all of this together, I have to wonder now if Daniel is the reason Desmond’s work on the island isn’t finished.  Desmond may still be needed to be Daniel’s constant, regardless of the fact that we’ve witnessed Ellie shoot and kill him.  We always have to remember that we are watching an island that heals, resurrects and one in which things don’t stayed buried for very long.

This episode also had some very intriguing mirror images.  What I love most about the mirror images in Follow The Leader was the fact that some of them led to some thought-provoked investigating and the finding of a few pieces of mythology to shadow the image.  Others mirrored past episodes and happenings simply by repeating a single line or gesture.  The mirror images I found this week are:

Ellie tells Jack about meeting Daniel in 1954 and then how he disappeared mirrored how Danielle panicked about seeing Jin again despite the fact that she had seen him disappear some time prior to Robert’s death.

Jack first meets Ms. Hawking in 2007 as a white-haired, aged woman and then encounters her younger self in 1977 when he returns to the island.  This is a mirror of how John Locke first meets Charles Widmore in 1954 while skipping through time and then again, off-island, in 2007 after he lands in Tunisia, where Charles is an older man.

Sayid believes that he has killed young Ben and changed the future for the Oceanic survivors.  This mirrored Desmond thinking that he could stop Charlie’s death from happening.  In both cases, neither was successful.

The Others make their trek to Jacob, led by John Locke, much in the same way the survivors of Flight 815 did to the radio tower, led by Jack Shepard.

Dr. Chang asks Hurley questions similar to the ones he was concerned the Dharma Initiative would ask him; namely, who the president was in 1977.

Kate and Juliet are handcuffed together again, similar to when they were kept together in “Left Behind”.

Ellie says “All right, let’s get started” in 1977 before heading to the Jughead, just as she says to Ben, Jack, Sun and Desmond above The Lamp Post.

Within the episode, we are seeing a mirroring in the change of leadership between the two times and factions on the island.  In 1977, Radzinsky takes charge in Horace’s role with the Dharma Initiatve (exchanging a good leader for a bad one) and in 2007, we see John taking charge in Ben’s old role with The Others (exchanging a bad leader for a good one).

Before entering the pool of water that camoflages the entry to the tunnel, Jack says to Sayid, “See you on the other side.”  This line was also said by Anthony Cooper when he and John were being brought to surgery for the kidney transplant.  Sayid was seen on the “other side” and John was not because of Cooper skipping out on him.

Widmore uses the term “rats” on two separate occassions:
WIDMORE: Crouched in the bushes… like rats. (Follow the Leader–about finding Jack and Kate)
WIDMORE: Yes, Benjamin, it is. You creep into my bedroom in the dead of night–like a rat–and have the audacity to pretend that you’re the victim? (The Shape of Things to Come)

John is the cause of his own death, since it was he who told Richard to tell the wounded Locke that he had to die.  So, in essence, Locke DID commit suicide, even though he was murdered.

normal_leader-297John brings the boar to Richard and the Others to gain acceptance just as Miles delivered a boar to Juliet, Sawyer, Daniel, John, and Charlotte; also John walks into the Others camp with a dead body (boar) on his back, much like he did when he had his fathers body on his back.

•    Mannanán’s powerful role in the cycle of life and death is also expressed in his possession of magic swine whose flesh provides food for feasting by the gods, and then regenerates each day, like that of Odin’s boar Sæhrímnir in Scandinavian myth.  (In Christian religion, the parallel would be loaves and fishes)
•    The boar made his appearance in mythological circles when one was offered as a gift to Frey, god of rain, sunshine, and the fruits of the earth. This boar was a remarkable animal; he could run faster than a horse, through the air and over water. Darkness could not overtake him, for he was symbolical of the sun, his golden bristles typifying the sun’s rays.

With only a couple of hours left in this season, we are forced to look back upon how far we’ve come, how many answers we’ve been give, and how many questions remain.  A year ago, we were left with the uncertainty of what happened to the island when Ben turned that wheel.  Since returning for the 5th season of the show, we’ve learned that answer and so many others, but other questions have been raised.  The sad bit will be when we know there is nothing left to answer and nothing to wait for after a long hiatus.

WFTB – S1E8 – Confidence Man – TweetUp Transcript

The LOST WFTB tweeps/twits/awesome folk got together again last night and re-watched Confidence Man, a great time was had by all.  Series wise, this was a first look at Sawyer or the man that took on Sawyer's name as we'd find out later on in the episode.  It was also full of twisty little shifts and another iteration of black versus white.

The plot centered around Shannon's inability to breath thanks to an asthma attack and using the last of her inhaler.  Boone knew there was another in her luggage, but they hadn't found their bags.  Sawyer, however, was reading Boone's book (Watership Down), and in a fit of Holmesian logic *snap* it musta been Sawyer.  The camp loves to hate Sawyer so soon the mighty brain trust of Sayid, Kate and Jack were centered on the *fact* that Sawyer must have taken the inhaler and was holding it for his personal gain.

Sawyer's backstory revealed that his off island life was a that of a Confidence Man, Con Man, skallywag. The interplay between backstory and island story revealed that  Sawyer (if that is his REAL name) became a con man, despite a life long quest to get revenge on a con man that destroyed his family.

In the end, Shannon's breathing returns to normal despite the efforts to torture the location of the inhaler from Sawyer (and Sawyer did finagle a kiss from Kate, the skallywag), when Sun used some crushed eucalyptus leaves to re-open her spasming airways.  But how much relational damage was done to Jack-Sayid-Sawyer?  How much of that was played out by our favorite guru, Locke, lying to Sayid about how he got hit in the head?

We'll have to find out by continuing to watch from the beginning.  Next live tweetup on Monday when we watch S1e9 - Solitary.  Stop by Twitter and search for hashtag #WFTB and find out how you can join in the fun.

Meanwhile, here is the transcript.  Tack on your own revelations in the comments.

Namaste. (transcript follows)

#LOST #WFTB Tweet-Cap for LOST #108 "Confidence Man" LiveTweet (read top to bottom) #s1e8

batchout: And.... PRESS PLAY! "Confidence Man" / Re-Watchers: http://u.nu/6x88 / First Timers: http://u.nu/7x88 / Enjoy!

jstueve: Previously on Sun was a liar and could speak English all the time, Sayid gets the oar treatment with a tree limb

MollyFaraday: Whoot Sawyer-ness...this ep makes me teary everytime

MollyFaraday: lol skinnydipping sawyer! mmmmm

ZachsMind: @nancymk if memory serves it's the first SawyerCentric

nancymk: @ZachsMind I believe that it is.

batchout: It's about Bunnies! (Goin' to the Hydra)

ZachsMind: any excuse to get Sawyer out of his shirt, huh producers of Lost? Sheesh. LOL

batchout: Cool how we're meant to think Sawyer is on the island, oh wait it's a flashback! Saywer was quite a tease on his way out of the water

Model_Melissa: lol Its about bunnies

jstueve: "You weren't exactly supposed to see that" Sawyer (which really means, did you just see all that money?)

MollyFaraday: Blue Shirt! I looove the blue shirt.... im issueing a warning that i will be objectifying sawyer a whole lot during the next while

batchout: This Fall on the Island... Cave hospital!

nancymk: Whoever hit Sayid also destroyed the equipment- hmmm who would do that???

nyakototo: @batchout Few seconds late but here I am! :)

jstueve: yep, first Sawyer flashback, and we also get another look at the lives left behind and a wink at a long con correct tag now

ZachsMind: @nancymk "hmmm who would do that" uhm... I know but I ain't tellin'. =)

jstueve: Claire gets her hat. The disc 1 comm for Walkabout Jack Bender was saying how Emile was saying the first thing she'd find was a hat.

MollyFaraday: "I guess breathing's not cool" (-boone re. shannon) lol

nancymk: @ZachsMind all of us who have watched before know who, but now we can question WHY?

batchout: Wow, lots of issues for Jack to solve piled on at the Beginning. with a dash of Beefcake! "Commie Share Fest in Cave Town" LOL Sawyer

MollyFaraday: "you wanna see whos taller?" hahaha

jstueve: I love Saywer's whole economic theory

ZachsMind: Here's where the writers establish Sawyer as the big bad of S1.

nancymk: @jstueve It's just not the same as in "Cavetown", is it? LOL

jstueve: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Economics -- good background stuff onto what they espouse when it comes to 'stuff'

ZachsMind: Jack: "We're not savages Kate. ..not yet!"

sallads: haha.. How far are you in the episode?

Model_Melissa: dark side of Locke already

jstueve: and we get the first look at the letter in Sawyer's pocket (its important to remember)

batchout: @ZachsMind This is exactly why Hurley doesn't want to dole out the stuff in the thing next season :P Everybody hates the Aristocracy

MollyFaraday: aww that letter makes me so sad still

nyakototo: Silly Sawyer, throwing stones.

ZachsMind: I'm reminded how cool a character Sawyer is, and a great plot arc. And it all pretty much starts right here w/the letter.

jstueve: My son's watching 'Born to Run' s1e22 while I'm watching hope I don't get confused.

jstueve: oh, this conversation between Sayid and Locke is important later

nyakototo: What does it really mean to stick your nose in everything, Kate?

batchout: My Baby's Got A Secret. Sexy Outlaw beach. Locke, you are such a rumor monger.

nancymk: @MollyFaraday me too- he carried that burden for too many years

jstueve: oh wow, dark locke, stirring up the trouble, pushing Sayid in just the right spots how did he know to press the torture button?

ZachsMind: okay that scene w/Locke & Sayid was suddenly a lot creepier this time around, but it still plays which is amazing.

MollyFaraday: Sawyer doesnt hit back for the mere fact that he wants to make jack look foolish...we all know sawyer can kick his ass! :)

jstueve: sawyer even bleeds pretty

jstueve: omg loophole the loooooong con.

nancymk: @MollyFaraday I think Sawyer wants to be hated at this time because he doesn't like himself and who he has become.

jstueve: "Wait" says the mark, sly slime crosses Sawyer's face... I wonder if we should look for sly smile's crossing Locke's face

Model_Melissa: Charlie & claire are so cute!

ZachsMind: PEANUT BUTTER! I love peanut butter! =)

nyakototo: Very telling... this scene between Locke and Sayid.

ZachsMind: I had peanut butter just a couple hours ago! =)

batchout: Sawyer loves to be hated. Most likely the distance he keeps from a con. Sawyer's knowing smile was A+ Let them all eat Peanut Butter

MollyFaraday: Jedi moment! hahahaha

jstueve: "that was like a Jedi moment" - the first Star Wars reference by Hurley?

nancymk: Notice the necklace that Claire wears. Does anyone know what that is?

ZachsMind: Jack with Shannon here was actually not in character. I mean he showed a decent bedside manner there.

Model_Melissa: is this the first we've heard that saiid wa a torturer?

nyakototo: Terrifying not being able to breathe in the middle of nowhere. Damn Sawyer, you be selfish.

jstueve: Sayid admits that his job was to get the enemy to communicate, it looks like Jack is pro-torture

ZachsMind: there musta been a SW reference before now, but I can't remember one. Could be @jstueve

MollyFaraday: "Its gonna be awhile before youre wanna give me a piggyback!" lol

jstueve: I'm a big guy its gonna be awaile before you're gonna want to give me a piggy back ride

ZachsMind: Sayid mentioned it to Hurley before, but this might be the first time he reveals what he did in the Republican Guard

ASHATL: @jstueve Jedi, that was awesome quote

batchout: Hurley pointing out a Jedi Moment. Hurley & Charlie scene was great. Hurley really got angry!

jstueve: I wonder if they had to get Hurley off the island to explain why his getting bigger

nancymk: @jstueve I often wondered how he stayed so large on the island.

batchout: Is this the first "abduction" of the series? Sawyer must be scheming to deflate Jack/Sayid, and turn the other castaways against him.

jstueve: Stop what Chico. lol.. because he's with Sayid, the MAN.

Model_Melissa: it seems like sawyer only was into kate to piss jack off at first

ZachsMind: Oh this is still creeping me the hell out, and I've lost count how many times I seen this ep. bamboo chutes.

kristin_madeja: Interesting: Sawyer is a con-man. Clearly able to win people over & they buy who he is, yet he is so angry & wants people to hate him.

ZachsMind: Sayid "Unfortunately for us both, you're wrong." I'm wincing over here.

MollyFaraday: geez i really didnt like sayid or jack after this eppy.

nancymk: @ZachsMind I don't like watching this scene. Even more when I know the outcome

ASHATL: The start of Lon Con messing with all order. Sawyer must be scheming to deflate Jack/Sayid, and turn the other castaways against him.

Psifen: Looks like Sawyer has a one way ticket to Guantanamo Bay.

kristin_madeja: The contrast is so interesting and contradictory.

ZachsMind: "No wonder we kicked your ass in the Gulf." WINCING!

Sefus: I remember this. This episode is crazy! Friggin Sawyer! Confidence man.

nyakototo: @Model_Melissa Got this impression too.

jstueve: even in the middle of being tortured, Sawyer keeps his long con in mind, only going to tell Kate

MollyFaraday: Hahah Sawyers hair all slicked back= :)

batchout: Sun you naughty Girl. Sayid and Jack getting all #24 . Oldham was much more humane, Dude. "Tex" Sawyer gets CALLED a nickname!

jstueve: I don't think they had any LSD sugar cubes to use as an Oldham option

ASHATL: Interesting that Kate says if u do this Jack...proving Sawyer's point from the moth that they are not diff.

MollyFaraday: Oh Sawyer "baby, im tied to a tree in a jungle of mystery"

jstueve: 'soon as I get that kiss" - "just got tortured by a spinal surgeon and a gen-ewe-wine Iraqi" of course I'm serious.

jstueve: we should pause and let @MollyFaraday collect herself a bit after that kiss.

Model_Melissa: omg poor sawyer he has gone through so much, starting with getting tortured and stabbed here

nyakototo: Sick, terrible scene.

batchout: Sawyer's got the puppy dog eyes when he needs 'em! Another Con man making time with Kate, then mocking her. Deserved punch.

jstueve: this is the dark music.. getting em riled up.. and who riled up Sayid... Locke.. damn.

ZachsMind: "I don't have it." "What?" And that my friends is one reason how come season one of Lost rocks. Long cons abound!

batchout: Aren't you supposed to leave the Knife IN as long as possible? Boone=Shannon's lap dog. Ooh Sun, I'm telling!

jstueve: Boone always wants to get in on the good stuff 'You went after Sawyer and you didn't even tell me?"

ASHATL: But he is a baaad boy! RT @Model_Melissa : omg poor sawyer he has gone through so much, starting with getting tortured and stabbed here

MollyFaraday: @jstueve hahahaha ohman Love me some Sawyer! Im such a "skate"r too

ZachsMind: Woah did you guys see how Sayid just looked at Shannon right there?

nyakototo: Kate, stop acting.

batchout: Michael to Jin: My boy Walt's got my Back, so STEP TO THIS!

ASHATL: Always a trouble mkr/RT @jstueve : Boone always wants to get in on the good stuff 'You went after Sawyer and you didn't even tell me?"

Model_Melissa: sawyer reminding me of ben here, when ben saw charlie hume on penny's boat

jstueve: no captions, did Jin just figure out that Sun speaks English?

nyakototo: That kiss always looked like it smelled dirty. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

ZachsMind: anyone else w/me regarding Michael & Sun? I still think they had a moment in the woods somewhere early on.

Psifen: Oh you know you wanna kiss him Kate, you're a genuine hoe. Done kissin' Sawyer? Now go kiss Jack.

MollyFaraday: Sawyer to Jack "thats what you do...fix everything up all nice" Sawyer is an excellent read of character

ASHATL: So did anyone notice that Locke didn't do anything about Jack (in Moth) and now he gets Said to go after Sawyer...hum, foreshadow?

nancymk: @ZachsMind they show it on the Lost moments ABC site

jstueve: Very much so, good catch. RT Model_Melissa: sawyer reminding me of ben here, when ben saw charlie hume on penny's boat

MollyFaraday: We could make a drinking game about how many times sawyer has puppydog eyes!

ASHATL: That's funny//RT @jstueve : no captions, did Jin just figure out that Sun speaks English?

batchout: Sawyer has BALLS mocking Jack for his need to Help, lying there bleeding. Seeing The Kid, he gains a conscience (Flashback needed)

ElyssaD: RT @jstueve : "Unfortunately for us both, you're wrong" - Sayid (remember that in a few more epis)

Psifen: Boone: "I'm not going anywhere..." It sure did look like he was going somewhere to me.

jstueve: @ASHATL yeah, Locke seems to be stirring the pot, playing a side against the other, and motivating Sayid to get Sawyer to talk.

nancymk: @batchout You would think that would be a turning point for Sawyer- seeing that he has become the man he hates

ZachsMind: @nancymk I mean something more than a kiss. That we haven't seen yet.

jstueve: you just wanna drunk tweet. :P RT @MollyFaraday : We could make a drinking game about how many times sawyer has puppydog eyes!

nyakototo: There were tiny moments when I really loved Michael. Too much back and forth in the first seasons with certain characters.

jstueve: This letter is critical in the long long story of LOST and how Sawyer's changed and grown.

jstueve: "Don't you feel sorry for me" is Saywer's "You can't Tell me what not to do."

MollyFaraday: "i became the man i was hunting"

ASHATL: RT @jstueve : #ASHATL yeah, Locke seems to be stirring the pot,. I just think that he is setting things up...I think Esau is at work.

nancymk: @jstueve I agree. Sawyer's charactor has developed the most of all of them in my opinion.

nyakototo: Poor kid. I hate this scene. Bunch of selfish blockheads.

ZachsMind: SPOILER WARNING We saw Jacob meet both Sawyer and Kate at a very young age. Could Jacob be doing them a long con?

nyakototo: @jstueve I thought it was son of a bitch. *LOL*

jstueve: LOVE the peanut butter scene but its really just another way of manipulating... right?

batchout: Charlie is cheering us up after his dark last couple of eps. Claire is his chance 4 the tenderness his family lacked. Sayid Walkabout!

MollyFaraday: One of my alltime fave scenes: Peanut Butter! makes me smile uncontrollably

ZachsMind: And here we're setting up the SayidCentric episode later in the season.

nyakototo: @MollyFaraday Perfect line.

ASHATL: I disagree. Once a con...//RT @Nancymk : @jstueve I agree. Sawyer's charactor has developed the most of all of them in my opinion.

batchout: is Kate the almost the only pretty girl that hasn't turned on Sawyer.

nancymk: @MollyFaraday that is so cute. one of my fav scenes overall!

ZachsMind: I remember the first time I watched that, that was EPIC. Sayid venturing off alone. Having to wait to know what he'd find

jstueve: Jacob touched Jack, Kate and Saywer before the flight. later, they'll all make Ms. Klugh's list for Michael to bring back.

ASHATL: @ZachsMind This is EXACTLY what I am thinking . Charles said this is a war from long before...

ZachsMind: Blind Boys of Alabama. Great song. Great band.

jstueve: @ZachsMind actually the NEXT episode is Sayid's flashback.. this whole episode sets it up.

nancymk: @ASHATL I mean from season 1 until season 5-re Sawyer's charactor development

MollyFaraday: Its nice to be reminded the sayid has a conscience.

jstueve: like the song, Cannot Walk Alone.. lyrics, link?

nyakototo: Peter Pan is a tease.

Psifen: Mmmmmm, here we go again, "bloody peanut butter" 'now with more blood!'

Model_Melissa: its weird to me that they played music in the closing scenes first season

batchout: Keep tweeting if you want, I will record the transcript for another hour.

ASHATL: But the whl time on S5 he was conn. Dharma//RT @Nancymk : @ASHATL I mean from season 1 until season 5-re Sawyer's charactor development

nancymk: @Model_Melissa it started out to be more of a drama in season 1

ZachsMind: It's intriguing. When first watching this years ago, we thought Sawyer the antagonist. Long con has many meanings here.

nyakototo: @Psifen You silly! ;P

nancymk: @ASHATL he was, but he was in a leadership position & seemed to be comfortable with himself.

jstueve: but his long con of Dharma was required to keep them from knowing they were from the future, he wasn't conning for self-gain

ZachsMind: When the batteries in Hurley's CD player died I thought that was when they stopped using music in this way. forget the ep.

MollyFaraday: A great ep, always a classic. Gives the viewers a reason to like sawyer (besides his good looks lol)

Psifen: Bad Robot!

jstueve: The first season was all about getting to know the characters and their ties and growing links.

nyakototo: That was fast! Touch the surface sort of episode.

batchout: @jstueve Lyrics are at http://bit.ly/13bSd7 The Blind Boys of Alabama also covered Tom Waits for The WIRE theme.

aliasgirl18: @ASHATL I agree, I don't think Sawyer changed, his whole time at Dharmaville was another long con and he was ready to leave on the sub

batchout: Sawyer's Porn Name: Long Con Silver

aliasgirl18: @jstueve The only 1 that would have bel they were from future was Chang.Sawyer had a cushy life in Dharmaville and wanted to keep it

MollyFaraday: RT @batchout Sawyer's Porn Name: Long Con Silver // hahahahah genius!

ASHATL: RT @jstueve : but his long con of Dharma...//I still don't buy it, my brother. Let's see what happens at end :D

jstueve: lots of setup, primarily setting up sayid's next episode, but also cementing Charlie and Claire relationship that's gonna be critical

ZachsMind: I'm very self conscious about reading too much into it, but it is starting to look like Locke was manipulating Sayid.

jstueve: But... @ASHATL@aliasgirl18 I don't think Sawyer would've left if he didn't have to.. .he was happy in Shambyla with Juliette

ZachsMind: We didn't think Locke capable of this on first run, but now it's a much easier leap to make. But am i reading into it?

jstueve: part of what Locke did was deflecting Sayid's questions away from himself, for reasons that become evident later.

MollyFaraday: Sayid has been morally corrupt so many times...He bounces between good and bad, wrong and right so many times, ive lost count

jstueve: and ... Sawyer was an easy target back then, the outcast, loner, playing for his own gain. Easy for Locke to project Sayid onto

ASHATL: Great episode guys. Sorry I was late for the tweet time. :( .

nyakototo: @ZachsMind No, you are not. There are moments where it seems too obvious with Locke.

aliasgirl18: @jstueve right but he was content on leaving with the sub and not worrying about those left behind. Juliet made him come back.

jstueve: They all do, Jack, Kate, Locke - loops RT @MollyFaraday ...bounces between good and bad, wrong and right so many times, ive lost count

ZachsMind: Sawyer tells Kate he became a bad man. Sayid says essentially the same to Kate at the end.

nyakototo: RT @batchout Sawyer's Porn Name: Long Con Silver *LOL* Genius!

ZachsMind: the characters of Lost are uniquely human. Each has a dark & light side, and The Island brings out the best & worst in all

jstueve: good pt RT @aliasgirl18 : rt but he was content on leaving w/ the sub & not worrying abt those left behind. Juliet made him come back.

ASHATL: You betcha RT @ZachsMind : Locke was manipulating Sayid.

ASHATL: Still intrigues me why him//RT @jstueve : and ... Sawyer was an easy target back then. Easy for Locke to project Sayid onto

MollyFaraday: They perfectly set up "Solitary"....making Sayid judge himself, and reconsider where he belongs...where do any of them belong?

jstueve: I'm out, thanks for taking helm @batchout I'll post the live tweet transcript to the site in the morning. Next ep s1e9 "Solitary"

ZachsMind: Will try to hang a bit in blip.fm with ya @batchout but got a ladyfriend to whom I should be attending.

MollyFaraday: I love character analyzing! lol We still dont fully know who the Losties are

ASHATL: See you guys. Going to sit outside and enjoy some time with hubby. C U guys on Monday (and on time!) @batchout, great job filling in!

nyakototo: @ZachsMind I noticed you and I are on the same page about many things. This is extremely awesome.

ZachsMind: As I was sayin watching Locke & Sayid in this ep, is this sufficient evidence to say the writers have been longconning us?

nancymk: RT @ZachsMind: the characters of Lost r human. Each has dark & light side, &Island brings out the best & worst in all

nyakototo: @MollyFaraday This sort of person scares me, especially the direction he heads into in the latter seasons.

ASHATL: I agree. Conspiracy theory! RT @ZachsMind: is this sufficient evidence to say the writers have been longconning us?

ZachsMind: @nyakototo Glancing at your bio I'm a fan of X-Files & David Lynch too, tho not so much now. We may have more in common

ZachsMind: I don't mean to gloss over this rare precious moment w/C&C. Rivals the Kate fiascoes in preference, for my money.

ZachsMind: I prefer the sweetness of Claire & Charlie to the frustrations of Kate, but there's not as much to talk about there.

ASHATL: Is there any1 who participated at the live tweet & I am not following? If so, send me a note. I want to follow to catch all comnts

ZachsMind: MIGHT explain how the Kate Fiascoes are more popular overall, because conflict gives more to discuss around water coolers.

ASHATL: @Nancymk totally agree. But I think we will definitely find out which side they will be. Epic good vs evil sides, so expect teams!

VivaLaSara: @LOST_WFTB I'm so sorry I missed ! Some things came up and I had to go help my cousin with something :/ hope you guys had a good time!

ZachsMind: @nyakototo I forget which ep is Kate's horse. Rather rusty. Fear I've forgotten more Lost Trivia than i remember.

ZachsMind: you were with us in spirit @VivaLaSara =) it's cool.

ZachsMind: Did we run out of stuff to say about this episode? See everybody Monday for s1e9!

ZachsMind: @nancymk Great song! Here's an acoustic version of it complete w/video. I prefer this to the ... ♫ http://blip.fm/~7ar1r

Lost Fantasy League: Season 5 Finale Update!

Since DarkUFO is away this week, we're going old school with the video! And it's the last one for the year folks because we have reached the end! After countless hours of exhaustive Lost viewing, analyzing and scoring, we finally have our winners!

It's almost hard to believe that we've made it through the 5th season of Lost so quickly. Where did all the time go? With all the action and excitement provided by the finale, there are some important point rulings that were made that you should understand before sending any complaints my way.

Also, due to the Man in Black dilemma, I had to go back and adjust scores from several episodes in the second half of the season. That information is also below in the Important Point Rulings section and I highly advise you read through it so you understand why you may now be drastically higher or lower than before.

But now for our winners!

FIRST PLACE: Mapleleaf50's Team O'Lost
PRIZE: Season 5 DVD and Soundtrack

SECOND PLACE: Keamy's Team of Killers
PRIZE: Season 5 DVD

THIRD PLACE: Sawmond
PRIZE: Season 5 Soundtrack

We're going to leave these results as unofficial for 3-4 days. In that time, please let me know if I've missed anything from the finale! I watched it half a dozen times, so I'm pretty sure I've got it all right but I just want to be sure. Our winners will be contacted shortly and made aware of the situation. If, after 3-4 days, no one has alerted us to any scoring mistakes that affect our top 3, they will be declared the official winners of the Season 5 Lost Fantasy League.

If you've got any questions, consult the League rule book at the bottom of this post. If you can't find an answer to your questions there, shoot me an email at LFLquestions@gmail.com. I will do my best to get back to you as promptly as possible.

"The Incident" in 750 words or less:

Much like our beloved Losties, Jacob is a very well-traveled individual. Way back in the days of the Black Rock he was kicking it on the beach and teasing a very frustrated Man in Black. Methinks he pushed him a bit too far because the Man in Black says he really really wants to kill Jacob.

Later on, Jacob pals does some sightseeing and gets in touch (literally) with most of the main characters that are still alive either before the crash of Flight 815 or after the Oceanic 6 get rescued. Except for Juliet. She just gets to huff and whine about her parents' looming divorce.

Now to the present, or past, really. Jack and Sayid get the warhead out of Jughead and Richard gets all over Ellie's head with his gun. He sends Jack and Sayid on their little fool's errand and takes Ellie back to her people, because evidently she's the leader now. Sayid gets the bright idea to put on a DHARMA jumper and walk straight through the Barracks with the bomb in tow. And it works out just as well as you'd think it would- horribly. Roger spots the SOB that shot his kid (notice he never calls him Ben) and returns the favor (only Sayid's bullet wound doesn't move around). Jack blasts his way out of Mos Eisley with a little help from his friends.

Meanwhile, Sawyer & Co. ditch the sub and find Rose & Bernard, who have been living on their own for the last three years with Vincent. Yeah, that's right- they managed to avoid DHARMA, the Hostiles, the Smoke Monster and Sawyer's search grids for three years in retirement bliss. I'm sorry but I have to draw a line somewhere. I can handle quadrangles, plot holes and episodes about the history of Jack's tattoos, but this is ridiculous. And sappy as all get out.

Jack & Co. race for the Swan and run into Sawyer & Co. Jack and Sawyer vent a little aggression, shake hands and walk away. Okay, so actually Jack gets his ass handed to him and is only spared because Juliet comes out of the blue and says Jack is doing the right thing even though she convinced Sawyer to try and stop him about an hour ago.

Kate suddenly is on Jack's side too now as he heads for the Swan while everyone begrudgingly sits around and waits to blow up. Then Miles points out what I've been saying for weeks now- that detonating the bomb is going to cause the incident so if they really want to change the past and future, they should just stay put and let the armed DHARMA dudes take Jack out. Suddenly everyone realizes they do want Jack to go nuclear after all. They bust in like the A-Team and hold everyone at bay while Jack drops the bomb. They wait in excruciating silence as Michael Giacchino's music makes everybody cry.

But nothing happens. Pretty sneaky! Everyone starts glancing out the corner of their eyes thinking WTF? Then the incident happens. The Island starts humming and metal goes flying everywhere. Some chains that were lying around for no good reason attack Juliet like they were the trees in Evil Dead and tackle her into the shaft. Sawyer grabs on but Juliet lets go, falls down and makes the bomb go boom.

In 2007/8 Richard is leading Locke, Ben, Sun and the Others to Jacob. Ben is still pouting over having to kill Jacob but Locke makes a good point in saying that Jacob was a real prick all this time so why not off the bugger. Meanwhile, Frank sees what's in the box an hour and a half before we do and follows Ilana and the rest through the jungle.

At night at the statue, Locke makes Richard take him to Jacob and brings Ben along. Richard starts going off about rules but Locke shuts him down ominously. Frank & Ilana show up to reveal that Locke's corpse is still dead and in the box, making the Locke inside the statue the Man in Black. Wow- it's impressive that they spent a whole half of the season pulling the wool over our eyes (even if it does mean Locke has been nothing but a tool all this time, which is sad).

Ben kills Jacob, who tells Fake Locke "they're coming." We'll find out what that means next year as Lost returns for its final season.

POINT ADJUSTMENTS FOR EPISODE 5x07: "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham"

John Locke: Locke loses all his post-Ajira crash points, including 3 New People/Places/Things, Polar Bear points, First Line, Goes in the Water, Last Line points, Last on Screen points and DHARMA visit points. Locke still retains all the points earned in his flashbacks though.

Christian Shephard: Picks up Fist Line points.

Ben Linus: Picks up Last Line and Last on Screen points.

POINT ADJUSTMENTS FOR EPISODE 5x09: "Namaste"

During the scoring for this episode we listed Christian Shephard as an Island Vision. In light of the Man in Black's ability to take on the shape of others, we reversed our decision on Christian for this episode. He had also not been labeled an Island Vision when he appeared to Locke in the Wheel Chamber, presenting us with a continuity issue with our scoring.

Christian: Loses Appears in an Island Vision points.

Frank: Loses Island Vision points.

POINT RULINGS FOR EPISODE 5x16: “The Incident”

1) Sayid and Nadia do not get Kiss points. While Nadia is dying, Sayid holds her and rests his face against her. While his lips may have touched her face, his mouth was wide open and I did not consider it a kiss.

2) The old Lostie beach camp does not count as a New Place for Ben or Richard. The Others knew where the Lostie camp was for months after the crash of Flight 815. Thanks to scouts like Ethan, Ben knew exactly where is was. Because Richard was one of Ben's top helpers, I believe that he would know the location as well.

3) Sun and Jin both get credit for their flashback. The FB began after focusing on Sun at the Lostie camp and then cut back to Jin and the others riding in the van. Because it is a joint FB, neither gets credit for appearing in the others FB.

4) The guitar case counts as a New Thing for Hurley. While there may have been hinting that the guitar case belongs to Charlie, it wasn't stated outright.

5) Ben gets New Place points for Jacob's lair inside the statue. Though Ben knows of the statue, he was never inside Jacob's lair and seemed not to know that this is where he actually lived.

6) Jack was not knocked out by the flying toolbox. While he appeared to have closed his eyes, we never saw him passed out for any stretch of time. He was very woozy for sure, but not knocked out.

7) Jacob picks up centricity for the episode. In the flashback where Locke falls from the window, the scene opens on Jacob. We ruled that because it opens on Jacob, it is a Jacob FB. This is Jacob's second FB of the episode and this qualifies him, per our rules, for centricity points.

8) Christian Shephard does NOT get points for Encountering Jacob. While Christian Shephard was briefly visible on screen with Jacob, Christian was walking away down the hall. He never glanced in Jacob's direction during the scene so I have no reason to think he saw him or was aware of his presence.

9) Locke's corpse does not count as a New Thing for anyone. It's the same old Locke everyone knew before, just dead.

10) Mr. Paik does not appear in this episode. During the wedding scene, there is a man in the front row who may have been a stand-in for Mr. Paik but he did not look enough like him for me to award points. The press releases and Lostpedia also do not list Mr. Paik as being present in the episode.

11) We are ruling that everyone that gets shot (except for Sayid obviously) during the Barrcks gunfight and the showdown at the Swan are killed. This greatly impacts the scores of several characters and was an extremely difficult decision to reach. After looking through countless screencaps and watching the episode six times, the people who get shot do not roll around like an injured person or move in any way. That was the key factor in making this ruling.

12) We have decided to rule that Juliet dies in the explosion of the Jughead core. While the fate of everyone else is still very much in limbo, we believe that Juliet is dead. We may be wrong but this is how we ruled on it. By detonating the bomb, Juliet loses points not only for dying but also for killing herself.

Season 6 is 8 months away, so this is the end of the Lost Fantasy Updates for the year. Season 6 sign-ups are coming soon though! We've just got a few things to work out yet but we're hoping that the Season 6 Lost Fantasy League will be the largest and best one yet! Don't worry- we'll let you know when sign-ups are coming. :-)

It's been another fun year of twists and turns but I'm glad to finally be getting a rest. I hope you all will stick around DarkUFO's site during the Hiatus because there will be all kinds of activities going on to keep our minds of the insufferable wait for our next Lost fix. I'll be popping up here and there throughout the hiatus with the Character Cup and a little pet project I've been working on for quite some time now. Keep your eyes pealed Lost fans!

Farewell dear Lost fans! I hope to see you all again in 2010 when the LFL returns alongside the final season of Lost.

Namaste and good luck!

One last time, here is the official Season 5 LFL rule book. Happy reading!
