According to Torrent Freak, Lost is the most pirated show on Bit Torrent, with an estimated 1,700,000 downloads last week alone. I understand why someone would download a pirated copy of a rare show that isn’t available anywhere else, and if a network doesn’t want to put a show out on DVD a part of me can’t feel too sorry for them. I also realize that when they’re scraping by and living off of Kraft macaroni and cheese fans can’t spend $50 on DVD collections no matter how much the show helps get them through their days. But ABC makes Lost available for free downloads, and back episodes are certainly available through other, legal means. They’ll be more available ever before once ABC gets the back episodes up on Hulu thanks to their new partnership. Is it really necessary to steal Lost and deprive ABC of the ad revenue from pageviews? That just seems gratuitous to me.
